CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The walk-off kings continued their run in the 2019 NCAA Division III Baseball College World Series with an extra inning win. No. 15 Birmingham-Southern baseball defeated No. 22 Johns Hopkins University 4-3 in 10 innings late Saturday night. They will face the winner between Babson and JHU Sunday at 7.45 p.m.
BSC (41-13) was led offensively by Alfredo Granier (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents' Episcopal), who went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Richie Misischia (Dothan, Ala./Regis HS) picked up his 10th win of the season after coming in to close the final two innings.
Hopkins struck first, scoring two runs to open the game. The Panthers responded in the second inning. After Luke DePiero (Atlanta, Ga./Walker HS) singled up the middle, Granier doubled to right field on an 0-1 count to score DiPiero.
The Panthers were down 3-1 in the fourth when Hanan Mauldin (Florence, Ala./Florence HS) entered on the mound and shut down the Blue Jays. He went 4.1 scoreless innings to give BSC a chance at a comeback.
With two outs on the board in the sixth inning, Tyler Hamel (Atlanta, Ga./Alpharetta) sent a 3-0 pitch over the right field wall for a solo shot that pulled BSC within one. The Panthers earned the equalizer in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Cole Steadman (Birmingham, Ala./Briarwood Christian) led off with a double down the right field line and advanced to third on a balk. He came across to score when Brian Williams (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter HS) grounded out to second. The Blue Jays would get out of it without giving up the go-ahead, and both teams remained scoreless in the ninth to force extra innings.
In the bottom of the 10th, Granier led off with a single to right field. Misischia attempted to move Granier over with a sacrifice bunt, but an error by the pitcher put him on base too. After Granier was thrown out on a fielder's choice at third, Williams was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Wise strode into the batter's box with one out and bases loaded. He fouled off the first pitch, and watched the second for a ball. Hopkins' brought in the left fielder to play on the infield grass and shifted the infield defense to cover for ground balls. After getting behind in the count with another foul ball, Wise drilled the next pitch up the middle. The shortstop picked it up and threw home, but the throw was low and the catcher could not cleanly pick it up. Misischia slid in behind him for the game winning run.
