Berry Secures First Win of the Season in 2-1 Victory Over Maryville

ROME, Ga. — Ben Coker tossed four innings allowing no earned runs, as the Berry College baseball team won its season opener over Maryville 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon.

Coker picked up his first victory of the season, while freshman Mason Carnes handled the ninth inning earning his first career save.

Maryville threatened in the top of the first inning, working the bases loaded with one out. Coker then tossed his first strikeout of the year and secured a ground out to escape the inning. Berry then scored two runs off sacrifice flies from Spence Johns and Quinn Smith in the home half of the first to go ahead. The Scots added their run off an error in the third inning, but solid pitching from Milan SutariaWill Macolino and Carnes secured the win.

This marks the Vikings' first season-opening win since the 2016 season.

The team returns to William R. Bowdoin field on Saturday to open a series with Emory & Henry. The doubleheader is set to begin at noon.
