Nickles, Selden Lead #20 R-MC Baseball past Belhaven

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Senior Shawn Nickles (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) and junior Jacob Selden (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) both doubled and knocked in two as No. 20 Randolph-Macon outscored Belhaven 9-3.

How It Happened

  • The Yellow Jackets again scored in the first. Freshman Ricky Gannett (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) drew a one-out walk in the top of the first and moved to third on a double by senior Mike Nickles (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge). Gannett scored when senior Reece Yeargain (Chester, Va./Benedictine) reached on an error.
  • After the Blazers plated a pair in the second, R-MC reclaimed the lead in the sixth. Selden drew a leadoff walk and went to second when senior Cole Grinde (Woodford, Va./Caroline) reached on an error. Senior Zach Evans (Fort Mill, S.C./Seneca) reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Sophomore Spencer Pietruszynski (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) delivered a sacrifice fly to bring home Selden with the tying run. Senior Ryan Duphorn (Erial, N.J./Paul VI) reached on an error to drive in Grinde with the go-ahead run. Mike Nickles knocked in Evans with a base hit and Duphorn scored on a passed ball to give the Yellow Jackets a 5-2 advantage.
  • Belhaven got one back in the bottom of the sixth before Shawn Nickles and Selden delivered back-to-back two-run doubles to make the final 9-3.

  • Mike Nickles reached five times, going 3 for 4 with two walks. Pietruszynski also had three hits. Duphorn scored twice.
  • Junior John Reynolds, Jr. (Bumpass, Va./Louisa) worked the first four innings and allowed five hits, two runs, one walk and five strikeouts. Junior Zack Radcliffe (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) earned the win in relief, going two innings with one hit, one unearned run and no walks. Freshman Hayden Snelsire (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) tossed two hitless innings with one walk and three strikeouts. Senior Hayden Moore (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) worked a scoreless ninth with two hits and two punchouts.
