Baseball falls to Ferrum 9-4 in Rawlings Southern Classic

The Oglethorpe baseball team came into Saturday's matchup against the Ferrum Panthers looking to build on a strong 8-3 victory Friday night over Greenville. The home side battled, but were unable to complete a late comeback, falling 9-4 to the visitors.

It was a solid start on the mound for senior left-hander Kyle Babb who faced 17 batters, struck out three and allowed no earned runs through the first four innings. The Petrel bats also got going early, with junior second baseman Alex Featherstone delivering an RBI single in the bottom of the third that scored freshman catcher Sam Janis and gave the Petrels a 1-0 lead. Babb was forced to leave the game early, though, and freshman right-hander Gabe Davenport came on in relief in the fifth inning.

The middle innings were a struggle for the Petrels, as Josh Greenway got the Panthers offense going with a 2-run single, allowing his team to jump ahead 2-1. Ferrum was able to put up five more runs in the sixth inning, including two home runs, going up 8-1 on the Petrels.

Oglethorpe relievers were able to limit damage for the remainder of the game, however, allowing just one additional earned run over the final three innings. The offense kept fighting, as freshman center fielder Carter Guarino recorded an RBI single, and junior first baseman Alec Babb notched a 2-run double in the bottom of the seventh.

Davenport suffered the loss, while Ferrum's Will Davis grabbed the win. The Petrels will look to bounce back with a win Sunday afternoon against Greensboro to close out the Rawlings Southern Classic at Anderson Field.
