Duphorn Leads Offense for #20 R-MC Baseball vs. #4 Cortland

ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Ryan Duphorn (Erial, N.J./Paul VI) had three hits, two runs and two RBI as the No. 20 Randolph-Macon baseball team scored five in the eighth to tie the game before fourth-ranked Cortland tallied four unearned runs in the 10th in a 12-9 win on Sunday afternoon.

The Basics

Score: #4 Cortland 12, #20 Randolph-Macon 9 (10 innings)

Site/Venue: Ashland, Va./Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park

Records: R-MC 4-1, Cortland 2-1

How It Happened

  • The Yellow Jackets stranded a pair in scoring position in the bottom of the second and saw the Red Dragons plate two in the top of the third before they dented home plate in the bottom of the frame. With one away, Duphorn laced a single to center and went to second on a base hit through the left side by freshman Ricky Gannett (Newark, Del./St. Mark's). Senior Mike Nickles (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Senior Reece Yeargain (Chester, Va./Benedictine) had a good at-bat in drawing a walk on a full count to force in the first run. Following a pitching change, senior Shawn Nickles (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) had an outstanding at-bat as well, earning a walk on a full count to bring in a second run. With two away, sophomore JT Fitzpatrick (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) was plunked on a 2-0 pitch to give R-MC a 3-2 edge.
  • The Red Dragons would score two in the fourth, two in the fifth and single runs in the seventh and eighth to take an 8-3 lead. In the bottom of the eighth, Yeargain and Shawn Nickles both had singles up the middle to start the inning. Both moved up on a wild pitch and Yeargain came home on a base hit to right by senior Cole Grinde (Woodford, Va./Caroline). Fitzpatrick walked to load the bases and sophomore Spencer Pietruszynski (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) singled to knock in Shawn Nickles. A wild pitch plated Grinde to make it 8-6. Duphorn lined a ball into the right field corner for a two-run triple with one away, knotting the score at 8-8. He would be stranded at third, keeping the game deadlocked.
  • Cortland stranded a runner in scoring position in the top of the ninth, and R-MC could not take advantage of a leadoff walk in the bottom of the ninth, forcing extra innings. The Red Dragons would score four unearned runs in the 10th on one hit. Duphorn singled and scored in the bottom of the 10th, making the final 12-9.

By The Numbers
