Drew Upsets No. 5/11 Kean

UNION, N.J. - Three pitchers combined for Drew's second-straight five-hitter and the Rangers upset No. 11 Kean University 3-1 Wednesday afternoon in non-conference baseball action.

Senior Jeff Serin spun five scoreless innings to pick up the win, firing nine strikeouts and yielding just one hit. Senior Vinny Carlesi came on to pitch 3 2/3 innings and allowed just one run before sophomore Teddy Hoxie recorded the final out with runners on base to pick up his second save in as many games this season.

The Rangers (2-0) also five-hit Alvernia University in their 3-2 season-opening victory at Kean this past Sunday.

Senior Jon Cocchio led Drew at the plate, going 2-for-4 while slugging a big two-run double that put the Rangers up 2-0 in the first inning. Sophomore Ryan Nagle also collected a pair of hits for Drew while classmate Shane Benson roped a double.

The Cougars (2-1) entered the game ranked No. 5 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper preseason poll and No. 11 in the D3baseball.com preseason poll.

The win marked the Rangers' first victory over a nationally-ranked opponent since they won two of three games versus No. 14 Catholic on March 24-25, 2018.

Senior Max Felsenstein got things started for the Rangers, drawing a walk to lead off the game. Senior Matthew Lange followed up with a single before junior Cole Bosch moved the runners over with a groundout to first. Cocchio then went the opposite way, drilling a 1-2 pitch down the rightfield line for his big two-bagger that made it 2-0.

It was more than enough run support for Serin (1-0), who settled in after allowing two batters to reach in the first. He fanned the side in the second, then helped himself by picking a runner off first base in the third. Serin went on to retire seven of the last eight batters he faced before exiting after 88 pitches.

The Rangers tacked on their final run in the sixth. Bosch and Cocchio led off with back-to-back singles, and Bosch would eventually score on a groundout by senior Anthony Tagliaferro.

Carlesi came on in the sixth and promptly worked three shutout innings. He started an inning-ending 1-6-3 double play in the sixth, then stranded a runner on first in each of his next two frames.

The Cougars rallied in the ninth, putting runners on first and second with two outs, and that's when Head Coach John Fugett summoned Hoxie out of the bullpen for the second game in a row. Kean's No. 8 hitter broke up the shutout with an RBI-single, but Hoxie, who tossed three scoreless versus Alvernia, induced a game-ending groundout to third.

The Rangers continue their season on Wednesday, when they visit Stevens Institute in a non-conference outing starting at 3 p.m.
