Hampden-Sydney Baseball Wins On The Road At No. 25 Christopher Newport 15-7

NEWPORT NEWS -- Senior Andrew Kasiski/Chesapeake had four hits and two RBIs, while classmate and captain Matt Spagnolo/Glen Allen provided two hits and five RBIs, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 15-7 non-conference baseball road win at No. 25 Christopher Newport University on Tuesday afternoon in Newport News. Senior Jonathan Triesler/Chesterfield gained the pitching victory for the visiting Tigers (2-2) against the preseason nationally-ranked Captains (2-3).

H-SC scored 15 runs on 17 hits … scoring four runs in the first inning and seven more runs in the second inning, before adding three runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth. The Tigers took leads of 4-0 through one, 11-1 through two, 14-1 through four and 15-2 through five. CNU added four runs in the eighth inning and one run in the ninth to provide for the final eight-run margin of victory for the visitors.

In the first, Spagnolo (2-2, 5 RBIs) walked with the bases loaded to score sophomore Mark Evans/Yorktown (0-3), who had walked to open the game. Junior Ryan Clawson/Moseley (2-4, RBI) followed a run-scoring single that plated Kasiski (4-4, 2 RBIs), who had walked, as well. Senior Chase Counts/Virginia Beach (2-4), who had reached on a bunt single, crossed the plate when junior Nick Grohowski/Chesterfield (1-4, 2 RBIs) was safe at first via a throwing error. Spagnolo scored when senior Josh Duimstra/Montpelier (1-3, 2 RBIs) also drew a bases-loaded walk.

In the second, Grohowski added a two-run double down the left field line that scored both Kasiski and Counts, who had singled and been hit by a pitch, respectively. Freshman Ryan Boyce/Suffolk (2-6, RBI) added an RBI single to score Spagnolo, who had walked, and Grohowski crossed the plate on another RBI single, this time from Duimstra. Kasiski contributed a two-run single that plated both Boyce and Duimstra, while Spagnolo reached on an infield single that scored sophomore Ethan Badin/Richmond (0-4), who had reached base courtesy of a throwing error.

In the fourth, Spagnolo hit a three-run double to center field with the bases loaded to score Evans, freshman Jay Beavers/Alexandria (1-2, RBI) and Counts. Evans had walked, while Beavers was pinch-running for Kasiski, who had singled, as did Counts.

In the fifth, Beavers added a run-scoring single that plated Badin, who had reached on another throwing error.

Triesler (1-0) started on the mound for the Tigers and pitched the first 7.0 solid innings, scattering nine hits and two runs, both earned, with nine strikeouts and no walks. Freshman Colby Owens/Chesapeake tossed one-third of an inning, allowing no hits and four runs, all earned, with no strikeouts and four walks. Classmate Justin Woodall/Mechanicsville recorded two-thirds of an inning, yielding one hit and no runs with one strikeout and no walks. Boyce pitched the final inning, allowing one hit and one run, earned, with no strikeouts and no walks.

H-SC returns home for a three-game weekend series against Moravian College on Saturday and Sunday, February 22-23, on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. The Tigers and Greyhounds will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m., followed by a single game on Sunday, also beginning at 12 p.m.
