Rhodes Downs No. 18 Coe College in Dramatic Fashion

Memphis - The Rhodes College Lynx baseball team opened up their play at the Rhodes Classic as they took on the No. 18 team in the nation, the Coe College Kohawks, Friday afternoon. The contest was dominated by two impressive starting/relief scoreless pitching performances, until junior shortstop Will Huertin walked the game off, in dramatic fashion, with a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth to bring the Lynx their fifth straight victory.

Rhodes College 1 (5-2), Coe College 0 (0-1)
WP: Alex Garrett (2-0) LP: T. Deardorff (0-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Top of 1st inning: The Kohawks were able to get a few baserunners on, but Lynx starting pitcher Jacob Dubbs was able to strike out the side to leave two Kohawks on base (0-0).

Bottom of 2nd inning: Rhodes had an early scoring chance as Wood Kimbrough led the inning off with a walk and Chris Penna was awarded first base after another base on balls. The Kohawk's starting pitcher threw his way out of the jam as the Lynx stranded two on the base paths (0-0).

Top of 5th inning: Coe's leadoff man walked, which was followed by two straight singles to load up the bases. Dubbs, faced with the bases juiced and zero outs, struck out the next hitter, got the following batter to fly out to shallow right field, and finished the inning on a strikeout to leave all three Kohawks' baserunners stranded (0-0).

Bottom of 9th inning: Huertin played hero as he squared up the ball with one out in the bottom of the ninth. The ball was smoked over the left field wall, which plated the only run in the contest to make the Lynx 1-0 winners over No. 18 Coe College.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Dubbs had an impressive start on the mound going five innings, allowing only two hits, zero runs, and striking out 11. This extends his scoreless streak to 11 innings. In his past two outings, he has at least carried a no-hit bid into the fifth inning.
  • Paul Giacomazzi, Willard Overstreet, and Huertin are the only three Lynx to record a base knock. Giacomazzi has tallied a hit in each of Rhodes' contests, which bring his hitting streak to seven consecutive games.
  • Each pitching staff recorded 17 strikeouts in the contest.
  • John Medich tossed three innings in relief, while holding the opposing hitters to zero hits, zero runs, and striking out six.
  • Garrett threw a scoreless frame, which resulted in him recording his second victory of the campaign.
