Lynx Defeat No. 2 Webster University on Walk-Off to Extend Win Streak to Six Games

Memphis - For the second consecutive day, the Rhodes College Lynx defeated a ranked opponent. Rhodes rallied behind an impressive offensive game to beat the No. 2 ranked team in the country, the Gorloks of Webster University, 15-5 (8 innings) Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Top of 1st inning: Webster grabbed an early lead as a they brought home the first run of the ballgame (1-0).

Top of 2nd inning: The Gorloks extended their lead as they were able to string together three base knocks, which led to two runs crossing the plate (3-0).

Bottom of 3rd inning: A Wood Kimbrough double to right field helped the Lynx chip away at the lead, bringing home Paul Giacomazzi and Peter York (3-2).

Bottom of 4th inning: Ben Wilson was hit by a pitch to begin the inning, and later came around to score when Willard Overstreet hit an infield single (3-3). York gave Rhodes the lead when he hit a deep fly ball to right field to plate Mitchell O'Berry (4-3).

Top of 5th inning: Webster knotted things up on a lone run with a single up the middle (4-4).

Bottom of 5th inning: The Lynx had a big inning as they strung together multiple hits, capitalized off of a few walks/hit by pitches, and brought home six runs. A John McNair single to center field got things started, bringing home two runs (6-4). With the bases juiced, O'Berry walked home a run (7-4). Overstreet recorded an RBI on a sacrifice fly to right field (8-4). Will Huertin and York singles plated a few more runs to cap off an impressive inning for Rhodes (10-4). 

Top of 7th inning: A double to left center brought home a run for the Gorloks (10-5).

Bottom of 8th inning (Final): The Lynx were able to end the game in a run-rule tallying five runs in the inning. Kimbrough smacked a two-run homer to dead center field (12-5), Sam Roffwarg singled home two runs (14-5), and for the second consecutive day Huertin hit a walk-off on a double to right center which plated the final two runs of the ballgame (15-5).

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Five different Lynx batters recorded a multi-hit game. Huertin led the way with three base knocks, while McNair, Kimbrough, Giacomazzi, and York tallied two each. 
  • Kimbrough recorded four RBI in the contest. York, Huertin, Overstreet, and Roffwarg finished with two.
  • Giacomazzi's base hit in the bottom of the fifth inning extends his hitting streak to eight consecutive games.
  • Sledge recorded his second victory on the mound.

Rhodes continues their play in the Rhodes Classic as they take on Transylvania University Sun., Feb. 23rd. First pitch is now scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
