Hampden-Sydney Baseball Defeats Southern Virginia 3-0

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, N.C. -- Seniors Jonathan Triesler/Chesterfield and Bradford Webb/Charlotte Court House combined to pitch a four-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 3-0 non-conference baseball win past visiting Southern Virginia University on Wednesday at Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark - Wurdeman Stadium. Triesler earned the mound win with 8.0 shutout innings and nine strikeouts, while team captain Webb gained the save with the final scoreless inning and one strikeout. Seniors Andrew Kasiski/Chesapeake and team captain Matt Spagnolo/Glen Allen each collected RBIs for the host Tigers (5-3) against the visiting Knights (6-3).

H-SC scored three runs on nine hits … scoring all three runs in the third inning. During that at-bat, senior Josh Duimstra/Montpelier (1-4) doubled to left field as the lead-off batter, and scored on a one-out, RBI single by Kasiski (2-4, RBI). Kasiski stole second base with two outs, then came around to score courtesy of a wild pitch thrown on ball four to senior Chase Counts/Virginia Beach (0-3). Counts would later cross the plate on a two-out, RBI single by Spagnolo (1-4, RBI).

It proved to be the only runs of the game as Triesler and Webb took care of the rest for the Tigers. Triesler (2-0) tossed his 8.0 scoreless innings, scattering three hits with nine strikeouts and no walks. Webb (2) pitched the final shutout inning for his second save in as many games, yielding one hit with one strikeout and no walks.

Freshman Ryan Boyce/Suffolk (2-3) and junior Nick Grohowski/Chesterfield (2-4) each had two hits for the hosts, including a double from Grohowski, while Boyce contributed a sacrifice hit, as well.

H-SC is scheduled to play a non-conference doubleheader at St. Mary's College of Maryland on Saturday, February 29, beginning at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's City, Maryland.
