Oglethorpe falls behind early en route to 15-4 defeat at LaGrange

The Oglethorpe baseball team fell behind in the first inning Wednesday evening and never could recover in a 15-4 defeat at LaGrange. The loss dropped Oglethorpe to 3-6 on the season.

The Stormy Petrels tallied a first-inning run as sophomore left fielder Will Arnold and junior first baseman Alec Babb both reached with two outs to bring sophomore designated hitter Rajan Sampat to the plate. The Petrel singled up the middle to score Arnold and give Oglethorpe a 1-0 lead.

However, LaGrange answered with 3 runs in the bottom half of the inning. They then added a run in the third, four more in the fourth, and another run in the fifth. That made it 9-1 in favor of the home side.

The Petrels scored a pair in the sixth on a 2-run single from senior right fielder Sam Buchanan. Oglethorpe then loaded the bases with nobody out in the seventh. A double-play grounder from Sampat scored a run, but got the Panthers out of a potentially dangerous inning, leaving the score 9-4. The home side proceeded to completely put the game away in the bottom half of the inning, scoring 6 runs to take a 15-4 lead.

Sophomore right-hander Drew Snow got the start and allowed 3 earned runs on five hits over three innings of work, suffering the loss. Arnold was the lone Petrel to tally more than one hit, going 2-for-2 officially with a walk and a run scored.

The Petrels get back to action Friday afternoon, when they take on the Berry Vikings in the SAA opener for both teams at 3 p.m. from Anderson Field. They'll then face them again in a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
