Sewanee Baseball’s Late Rally Falls Short to Colonels in SAA Opener

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Sewanee baseball team fell a run short to the Colonels of Centre College, 3-2, Saturday afternoon from Montgomery Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Sewanee had opportunities to strike first in the bottom half of the opening frame thanks to free passes to three of the first four batters. However, the Tigers left the bases loaded thanks to back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.

-Centre, after leaving two runners on base in the second, struck first in the third inning before tacking on two runs in the fourth to lead 3-0.

-Sewanee, who was struggling to scratch runners across the plate, finally tacked a run home in the bottom of the eighth. With the bases loaded, Braxton Swanson brought Jack Galanek home on an RBI base knock.

-After a three-up, three-down top of the ninth by relief pitcher Shane Smith, the Tigers added a run thanks to a Galanek single to bring home pinch hitter Max Murray, who led off the frame with a double.

-With the tying run at first base, the Tigers could not advance him further as the final two batters recorded an out to help give Centre the win in the conference opener for both teams.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Jack Galanek posted a three-hit day with an RBI and a run scored.

-Dalton Buckingham (1-1) allowed three earned runs in five innings. In relief, Shane Smith tossed four shutout innings with three punchouts.

CENTRE KEY STATISTICS
-Will Kirk posted a 3-for-5 day with a double and an RBI, while Jordan Gunter drove in two RBI.

-Carson Werrmann (3-0) punched out nine batters in six shutout innings.

UP NEXT
The Tigers will look to win the series on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
