Hampden-Sydney Baseball Defeats Ithaca (N.Y.) 9-4

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- Senior Chase Counts/Virginia Beach and freshman Ethan Currin/Toano each had three hits and two RBIs, and senior Jonathan Triesler/Chesterfield added four hits and one RBI, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 9-4 non-conference baseball neutral-site win past Ithaca (N.Y.) College on Saturday in St. Mary's City, Maryland. Sophomore Trenton Tiller/Powhatan earned the pitching victory for the Tigers (7-3) against the Bombers (1-3).

H-SC scored nine runs on a season-high 21 hits … scoring one run in the first inning, two runs in the second, and one run each in the third, fourth, sixth and seventh innings, and two runs in the eighth. The Tigers were tied at 1-1 after one inning, before taking leads of 3-1 through two, 4-1 through three, 5-1 through four, 6-1 through six, and 7-2 through seven before each team added two runs in the eighth for the final margin.

In the first, junior Nick Grohowski/Chesterfield (2-5, RBI) provided an RBI single to score senior Josh Duimstra/Montpelier (1-5), who had reached on an infield single.

In the second, senior Matt Spagnolo/Glen Allen (2-4) reached on a fielding error and later scored via a run-scoring single by Currin (3-5, 2 RBIs). Freshman Jay Beavers/Alexandria (3-5, RBI) doubled during the at-bat and later crossed the plate on a two-out, RBI single by Triesler (4-4, RBI).

In the third, Counts (3-5, 2 RBIs) led off with a double and scored on an RBI single by freshman Owen Tappy/Charlotte, N.C. (1-3, 2 RBIs).

In the fourth, Triesler singled to shortstop with two outs and then scored on a run-scoring single by Counts.

In the sixth, Triesler doubled with one out and later crossed the plate on a two-out, RBI single by Counts.

In the seventh, Spagnolo opened with a double and was pinch-run for by junior Matt Muehleck/Martinsville (0-0), who later scored on a sacrifice fly RBI from Tappy.

In the eighth, Currin added an RBI single to score Muehleck, who had been hit by a pitch, and Beavers also had an RBI single that scored Tappy, who had walked.

Tiller (2-1) started on the mound for the Tigers, pitching 6.0 solid innings and scattering two hits and one run, unearned, with the six strikeouts and three walks. Sophomore Nick Graziano/Virginia Beach tossed 2.0 innings, allowing three hits and three runs, two earned, with no strikeouts and one walk. Senior Cameron Meyers/Benson, N.C. (1) pitched a scoreless final inning, yielding one hit with two strikeout and no walks.
