Tanners help MacMurray split at Hendrix

CONWAY, Ark. – It was a good day to be named Tanner. 
 
Tanner Payton and Tanner Coleman gave the MacMurrayCollege baseball team key moments in a split with regional power Hendrix College. Hendrix took game one, 11-2, before the Highlanders used a two out, ninth inning rally to complete a come from behind 3-2 win in the nightcap.
 
Payton's two-run single came when the Highlanders were down to their final strike in game two. Additionally, Coleman -- the game two starter -- was great on the bump, escaping jams and keeping the Highlanders within striking distance.
 
MacMurrayimproves to 2-4 on the young season. The Warriors, who have received votes in the D3Baseball.com poll, slip to 4-9 overall.

GAME ONE: Hendrix 11 MacMurray2
 
Hendrix quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead after one. MacMurrayhad an immediate response in the top of the second. Hale poked a single to right to lead off the frame. Following a flyout, Alec Taylor reached via error, putting two runners on with one out. A groundout pushed the pair over 90 feet before Alec Lyle crushed a two-out, two-run double to the gap in left center. Lyle's two-bagger gave the visitors a 2-1 lead heading into the home half of the second. 
 
Once again, the Warriors had a response, tying the game in the bottom of the inning. The damage could have been worse, had starter Anthony Clark not picked off Hendrix's Justin Scott at first base. 
 
The Warriors were poised to take the lead in the bottom of the fourth as the hosts put runners at second and third with one out. Juan Pablo Leon lasereda line drive to right, which appeared to be a sac fly to drive in a run. Alec Taylor made an incredible throw from right, gunning down the runner at the plate and preserving the 2-2 tie after four innings. 
 
MacMurraystranded the go-ahead run at third in the top of the sixth, and in return the Warriors rallied in the bottom of the inning. The hosts pushed across five runs off five hits to pull ahead, 7-2. 
 
Hendrix broke the game open in the seventh, adding a pair before scoring their final two runs of the ball game in the eighth. 

Clark (0-2) suffered the loss for the Highlanders. The sophomore worked five innings, allowing 10 hits and four runs. The MacMurraybullpen allowed seven runs, six earned, over the final three innings. 
 
The Warriors pounded out 22 hits in the opener. 
 
GAME TWO: MacMurray3 Hendrix 2
 
Hendrix threatened early on, loading the bases with nobody out in the first. Sophomore starter Tanner Coleman struck out the Warrior clean-up hitter, before inducing a double play to end the inning. 
 
The hosts were able to scratch across a run off of a bunt in the second inning. Hendrix added their second run in the home half of the fourth. A leadoff double, a wild pitch and a walk put runners at the corners with no out. The Warriors eventually got a base hit, plating their second run of the game. 
 
Coleman avoided another bases loaded jam in the fifth, getting a lineoutand a strikeout to keep the Highlanders within two runs. 
 
The Highlanders trimmed the lead in half in the seventh. Taylor Coleman led off the inning with a walk. Lyle, coming in as a pinch hitter, also drew a walk. After a strikeout, Brendan Schanzreached on an error, loading the bases for LogsdonLogsdonMacMurray'sleading RBI man, slapped an RBI groundout to first, scoring Coleman and trimming the lead to 2-1. It was the senior's sixth RBI of the season. 
 
A leadoff double in the bottom of the seventh chased Coleman from the game, giving way to Hale. MacMurrayused a nifty fielder's choice on Hale's first batter, throwing out the runner trying to advance to third, to keep a runner out of scoring position. Hale eventually escaped the inning without giving up a run. 
 
With two outs in the ninth, Taylor singled to left center to keep the Highlander hopes alive. Schanzand Logsdonboth drew walks to load the bases for Payton. Down to the team's final strike, Payton laced a 2-run single up the middle to drive in Taylor and Schanzand give the Highlanders the lead. 
 
Despite two runners aboard in the bottom of the inning, Hale got Ford Sherrington to ground out to Lyle, who flipped the ball to Nick Martin at first to seal the comeback victory. 
 
Coleman was solid on the mound, tossing six innings, allowing just two runs and striking out four. Hale (1-0) was masterful in relief, earning the win after throwing three shutout innings.
