Ninth inning heroics gives Marietta a 6-5 win over Roanoke

BALTIMORE, Ohio — Seamus Kenneally delivered his second game-winning RBI in as many games as Marietta College defeated Roanoke College, 6-5, Saturday (Feb. 29) morning at Babb Field on the campus of Johns Hopkins University. The Etta Express improves to 2-0 over, while the Maroons falls to 5-4 on the season.

"Just like yesterday, we are excited to get a win against a good team on the road," Marietta head coach Brian Brewer said. "Stover scratched and clawed his way through today and then Wiggins did a great job out of the bullpen. He gave us the opportunity to get back in the ball game and take the lead."

After allowing Roanoke to score three runs in the top of ninth tying the game at five, the Pioneers rallied in the bottom of the frame for the win. Drew Holderbach reached on a one-out hit batsman and Brady Cottom followed with a single through the right side moving Holderbach to third.

The Maroons went to the bullpen and put freshman Owen Ledford on the mound. With the Roanoke infield playing in, Kenneally grounded to the shortstop who threw to the plate. Holderbach dove in head first and snuck his left hand between the catcher's legs scoring the winning run.

Kenneally finished 2-for-4 with a double, three runs batted in, two runs scored and a stolen base. Logan Vietmeier got the start at catcher and had a pair of singles and scored twice. Rodreco Rachel and Drew Wilkinson each drove in a run for the Pioneers.

Roanoke jumped on top with two runs in the top of the second inning off of Marietta starter John Stover. Carter Plunkett led off with a single up the middle and moved to second on an error by the MC first baseman.

Matt Wojciechowski was hit by a pitch and Sam Watson dropped down a sac bunt and reached safely on an error by Stover loading the bases. Gavin Kandrick followed with a two-run single through the left side of the infield.

Marietta answered with two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth taking a 5-2 lead. Rachel drove in MC's first run with a single between short and third and Wilkinson knocked in the second with a ground out to the third baseman.

In the fifth, Holderbach and Vietmeier both singled and stole a base giving the Pioneers runners at second and third for Kenneally. Kenneally singled up the middle plating both runners. After stealing second, Kenneally scored on an error by the Roanoke third baseman.

Stover worked four innings and gave up two earned runs on four hits. He struck out two Maroon hitters. Dalton Wiggins took over to start the fifth inning and worked four and a third innings. Wiggins allowed two earned runs on three hits. He walked one and struck out seven.
