Hampden-Sydney Baseball Wins At St. Mary's (Md.) 12-2

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- Senior Chase Counts/Virginia Beach had two hits, including a two-run home run, with three RBIs, and junior Nick Grohowski/Chesterfield added four hits and two RBIs, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 12-2 non-conference baseball win on the road at St. Mary's College of Maryland on Saturday in St. Mary's City, Maryland. Senior Chase Mayberry/Appomattox equaled his career-high with 11 strikeouts to gain the pitching victory for the visiting Tigers (6-3) against the host Hawks (2-2).

H-SC scored 12 runs on a season-high 20 hits … scoring two runs each in the first, fourth and fifth innings, one run in the seventh, three runs in the eighth and two more runs in the ninth inning. The Tigers led 4-0 through four innings, 6-1 through five, 7-2 through seven and 10-2 through eight, before adding the final two runs during their final at-bat.

In the first, Counts (2-5, 3 RBIs) provided an RBI single that scored senior Jacob Bartlett/Chesterfield (2-3, RBI), who had opened the game with a single. Grohowski (4-5, 2 RBIs) added a sacrifice fly RBI that plated junior Ryan Clawson/Moseley (1-2), who had doubled. Counts also had a stolen base during the at-bat.

In the fourth, senior Jonathan Triesler/Chesterfield (1-4, RBI) doubled to score freshman Ryan Boyce/Suffolk (3-4, RBI), who had singled, and Triesler later crossed the plate on a run-scoring single by Bartlett.

In the fifth, Boyce added an RBI single to score Clawson, who had walked to open the at-bat. Grohowski, who had singled, also scored courtesy of a bases-loaded walk to senior Josh Duimstra/Montpelier (1-2, 2 RBIs).

In the seventh, Duimstra added an infield RBI single that plated Grohowski, who had singled again.

In the eighth, Counts followed a single by freshman Jay Beavers/Alexandria (2-3, RBI) with his two-run blast to left field—his first and the team's second homer this season. Grohowski, who singled once-again, also scored on an RBI single by sophomore Ethan Badin/Richmond (1-1, RBI).

In the ninth, Beavers provided a run-scoring single to score junior Matt Muehleck/Martinsville (0-2), who had walked, while Grohowski added an RBI double to plate senior Cameron Meyers/Benson, N.C. (1-1), who had tripled.

Mayberry (2-0) started on the mound for the Tigers, pitching 8.0 solid innings and scattering seven hits and two runs, one earned, with the 11 strikeouts and two walks. Freshman Russell Bowles/Moseley tossed the final scoreless inning, yielding no hits with two strikeouts and no walks.
