No. 3 Birmingham-Southern Defeats Rhodes 8-3

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The No. 3-ranked Birmingham-Southern baseball team defeated Southern Athletic Association rival Rhodes College 8-3 in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.

The win broke BSC's three-game losing skid and gave the Panthers their first conference win of the season.

Junior catcher Will Evans (Peachtree City, Ga./Starrs Mill HS) opened up the scoring in the first inning with a two-run home run that scored sophomore Luke DePiero (Atlanta, Ga./Walker HS). The homer was Evans' first of the season.

The Panthers went on to score a run in the second, two runs in the third and fifth innings, and a solo run in the sixth inning to give them eight runs. Along with Evans, junior shortstop Alfredo Granier (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents Episcopal) also had two RBI in the game. First baseman Drew Love (Birmingham, Ala./Calhoun CC) and second baseman Will Toner (Atlanta, Ga./Marist HS) each ended the game with an RBI and two runs scored.

Junior righty Tristan Harvin (Dothan, Ala./Houston Academy) got the start on the bump for the Panthers and pitched five and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs while striking out four and walking two batters. Harvin earned the win and improved his record to 2-1 this season.

Freshman Hansen McCown (Indian Springs, Ala./Oak Mountain HS) came in in relief and pitched the final three and a third innings, allowing a run off three hits and striking out five Lynx batters. He was awarded the save, his first of the year.

With the win, Birmingham-Southern moves to 9-4 overall and 1-2 in the SAA. The Panthers return to the Hilltop for their next game against Huntingdon on Tuesday, March 3 at 6 p.m.
