York (Pa.) Erupts for 17 Runs to Pick Up First Win of 2020

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The York College baseball team picked up their first win of the year as they out-slugged Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday afternoon at the Ripken Complex in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The Spartans began the season with an 0-3 trip to the University of Lynchburg. The game is the first of four on the South Carolina stretch of their 2020 spring trip.

How It Happened

• The Royals jumped out to an early lead with a John Judy home run to lead off the second inning. York responded with a Jayden Cowan RBI single to tie the game at one. Austin Denlinger then stroked a two-run single to center to give York a 3-1 lead.

• After a scoreless third inning, EMU erupted for four runs in the top of the fourth. Brett Lindsay had a two-run single to tie the game at three. Robert Guenther then stroked a two-run bomb to put the Royals on top, 5-3.

• York got a single run back in the fifth on a Joe Capobianco RBI ground out. The Spartans blew the game open in the bottom of the sixth as they exploded for six runs. Luke Turner started the scoring in the inning with an RBI single after a Brandon White double to open the inning. Denlinger struck again as he ripped a two-run single to center to put York up 7-5. Junior Jimmy Wiegers then blasted a three-run shot to increast the York lead to 10-5.

• The Spartans removed all doubt with a five-run outburst in the seventh inning. Rob Acierno drilled a two-run home run in the inning while Wiegers capped the inning with his second home run of the game. Craig Wiley had an RBI single between the two long balls.

• York capped the scoring in the eighth with a pair of runs on five walks in the inning.

The Spartans are now 5-2 all-time against Eastern Mennonite … it's the first meeting between the two teams since April 9, 2011 … junior Jimmy Wiegers had his first collegiate multi-home run game with this two dingers on Tuesday … Wiegers' five RBI also set a career high … sophomore Austin Denlinger tied his career-high with four hits in the win … it's the third time Denlinger has produced four hits in a game … the four RBI for Denlinger set a new career high for the Spartans' lead-off hitter … Denlinger leads the Spartans in hitting at .474 with a team-high six RBI … sophomore AJ Vincenzi earned his first collegiate win as he went a career-high seven innings on the mound … the four strikeouts set a new career high … Vincenzi allowed four runs in the fourth inning but only surrendered one run in the other six innings of work … junior Jayden Cowan is hitting .500 (4-for-8) in his two games for York this year.

The Spartans will play a pair of games on Wednesday as they face Bridgewater at 11:00 am followed by a game against Eastern Nazarene at 4:00 pm in Myrtle Beach. The Spartans then close out their spring trip on Friday at 10:00 am against Moravian at the Ripken Complex.
