AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- Jeff Jenkins became the 9th active and 22nd all-time baseball coach to win 800 games at the NCAA Division III level, as Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology defeated St. Joseph's (Maine) 3-1 on Tuesday afternoon. 

Jenkins improved his career record to 800-539-2 overall, including a 755-474-1 mark at Rose-Hulman.  The Fightin' Engineer baseball program had won 440 games in nearly 80 years of program history prior to Jenkins arrival in 1990.  The veteran head coach has also served as Rose-Hulman's athletic director for the past 18 years. 

Tuesday's win was in a similar fashion to many of Jenkins' 800 career victories, as pitching and defense played a key role in the win.  Matthew Rouse threw 6.2 shutout innings, allowing just five hits and one walk with five strikeouts to pick up the win.  Clayton Mayfield, Brett Tuttle and Adam Taylor recorded the final seven outs to secure the win, with Taylor earning the save by tossing 1.1 shutout innings. 

Offensively, Shaine Mitchell led the Rose-Hulman offense with three singles, two runs scored and one stolen base.  Shane Garner added two hits, including a double, and Josh Mesenbrink pitched in with a double to provide offensive support. 

Rose-Hulman relied on single runs in the first, third and sixth innings to build the lead, and closed the game with its strong team pitching performance. 

The Fightin' Engineers improved to 2-0 on their spring trip to Florida, while St. Joseph's dropped to 1-5.  Rose-Hulman returns to action at 1:15 pm on Wednesday afternoon, facing Gwynedd Mercy.
