Strong start lifts Allegheny past W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team suffered a 10-3 loss to visiting Allegheny College in a non-conference game at Ross Memorial Park Thursday evening.

The Gators jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings of play before putting the game away with three more runs in the fifth inning en route to victory.

That was more than enough support for Allegheny's Sean Kealey, the reigning North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Pitcher of the Year. Allegheny tacked on three more runs of support for Kealey, who tossed seven shutout innings for the Gators. Kealey finished with 13 strikeouts and allowed just five hits.

With Kealey out of the game, the Presidents scrapped out three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Nate Rush(Wheeling, W.Va./The Linsly School) scored on a fielding error that gave the Presidents their first run. Evan Sante(Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) and Adam Morris (South Park, Pa./South Park) added RBI singles later in the frame to cut the deficit to 8-3.

Allegheny tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning to close the scoring.

Sante, Morris and Joey Bolick (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) recorded two hits apiece in the loss. Henry Litman(Marietta, Ga./Marietta) started and suffered the loss on the mound for W&J.

The Presidents (1-2) open play at the RussMatt Invitational against WPI on Sunday, March 8. W&J and WPI will play a doubleheader at Chain of Lakes Stadium in Winter Haven, Fla. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
