Hampden-Sydney Baseball Sweeps Roanoke 7-2, 3-2

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Seniors Jacob Bartlett/Chesterfield and Chase Counts/Virginia Beach each had three hits in the first game, and junior Ryan Clawson/Moseley hit a three-run home run, while Counts added two hits and two RBIs in the second game, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader sweep of Roanoke College on Saturday at Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark - Wurdeman Stadium. Senior Chase Mayberry/Appomattox earned the pitching win in the 7-2 opener with 10 strikeouts for the host Tigers (10-3, 2-0), while sophomore Trenton Tiller/Powhatan gained the mound triumph in the 3-2 nightcap against the visiting Maroons (7-7, 0-2). H-SC has now won seven-straight games and 10 of its last 11 games overall.

In game one, H-SC scored seven runs on 13 hits … scoring two runs in the first inning, one run in the third, one run in the sixth and three runs in the eighth. The Tigers took leads of 2-0 through one inning, 3-0 through three and 4-0 through six, before adding three insurance runs in the eighth to provide for the final five-run margin.

In the first, Counts (3-4, RBI) had a two-out, RBI single to score Bartlett (3-4, RBI), who had also singled, while junior Nick Grohowski/Chesterfield (2-4, RBI) added a run-scoring double with two outs to plate Counts.

In the third, senior captain Matt Spagnolo/Glen Allen (0-2, RBI) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to push classmate Andrew Kasiski/Chesapeake (1-2) across the plate—Kasiski had been hit by a pitch to reach base, as well.

In the sixth, Bartlett added a two-out, RBI double to score senior Josh Duimstra/Montpelier (2-4), who had singled.

In the eighth, Clawson (1-5, 3 RBIs) hit a towering three-run home run down the left field line that also scored Duimstra and Kasiski. Duimstra had singled, while Kasiski was intentionally walked ahead of Clawson's first homer this spring.

Mayberry (3-0) started on the mound for the Tigers, pitching the first 7.0 innings and scattering four hits and two unearned runs with 10 strikeouts and three walks. Senior Cameron Meyers/Benson, N.C. (1) tossed the final 2.0 scoreless innings for his first save this season, yielding no hits with three strikeouts and no walks.

In game two, H-SC scored three runs on eight hits … scoring two runs in the first inning and one run in the fifth. The Tigers led 2-0 through one inning before adding the insurance run in the fifth to provide for the final one-run margin.

In the first, Counts (2-4, 2 RBIs) had a two-run single with one out to score Kasiski (1-3) and Clawson (0-3), who had singled and walked, respectively.

In the fifth, Bartlett (0-3, RBI) contributed a sacrifice fly RBI that plated Spagnolo (2-2), who had reached base on a single.

Senior Jonathan Triesler/Chesterfield (2-3) added two hits in the nightcap, as well.

Tiller (3-1) started and pitched the first 5.1 innings, allowing five hits and one run, earned, with three strikeouts and no walks. Sophomore Nick Graziano/Virginia Beach tossed 2.2 scoreless innings, scattering three hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Senior captain Bradford Webb/Charlotte Court House (3) tossed the final inning for his third save this spring, yielding two hits and one run, earned, with one strikeout and no walks.

H-SC will travel south to play three games early next week, March 9-11, beginning at Brevard College on Monday, March 9, at 3 p.m. in Brevard, North Carolina. The Tigers will follow with road games at Huntingdon College on Tuesday, March 10, at 7 p.m. in Montgomery, Alabama, and at Piedmont College on Wednesday, March 11, at 7 p.m. in Demorest, Georgia.
