Oxy Wins G2 at Whittier, Going for Sweep

WHITTIER — The Occidental baseball team escaped with a one-run victory for the second game in a row, winning at Whittier 5-4 in Game 2 of their three-game series this weekend.

Antonio Andrade got the big hit, driving in Nolan Upchurch and Austin Twiss for the game-tying and go-ahead runs with a double in the top of the ninth inning.

It was a part of a three-run rally that also included Upchurch singling in Jake Fredrickson to cut the Poets lead to one run.

Fredrickson also drove in a pair of runs in the second inning and finished the day 2 for 4. Upchurch went 2 for 5.

Carry Lucas was rock solid for the Tigers in two innings of perfect relief, earning the victory.

Diego Ramirez gave up four earned in seven innings pitched as Oxy's starter.

The day before, Nolan McCarthy pitched eight solid innings and Andrade was a triple away from the cycle as the Tigers held off a late push from the Poets to win 5-4.

Season Impact: The Tigers improve to 7-6 overall and 2-0 in SCIAC play.

Whittier falls to 3-10 and 0-5.

Next Game: The Tigers are Poets complete their weekend series on Saturday afternoon.
