No. 12 Rhodes Sweeps Hendrix Doubleheader With Fourth Walk-Off of the Season

Memphis - The No. 12 Rhodes College Lynx were able to sweep their doubleheader against conference foe Hendrix College Saturday afternoon. The Lynx took game one 9-1 and game two 4-3.

Another strong starting pitching performance from Jacob Dubs and an explosive offensive day for Rhodes helped them to their game one victory. Dubs tossed five impressive innings, while holding the Warriors to zero hits, a lone run, and seven strikeouts as Dubs claimed his third win of the season.

Nathan Mirochnick (3 IP) and C.J. Carron (1 IP) tossed a combined four scoreless innings in relief. Mirochnick was able to strike out four batters in his three innings of work, while Carron struck out one.

Four different hitters for the Lynx recorded a multi-hit game one. John McNair led the way with three base knocks, while Peter York, Chris Penna, and Willard Overstreet tallied two each. 

Penna led the RBI total in game one as he recorded three, while two of those came from a two-run homer in the seventh inning. Ben Wilson and York tallied two RBI each. 

The Rhodes College Lynx out-hit the Warriors 10-3.


Game two was decided by an impressive comeback from the Lynx. Rhodes grabbed an early 1-0 lead, which held up until the fourth inning when Hendrix was able to knot things up at 1-1 on a sac fly. 

The game went into extra innings before the Warriors were able to take a two-run (3-1) lead in the top of the ninth, but the Lynx still had three outs to make something happen. Wood Kimbrough led off the bottom of the ninth with a double down the right field line. McNair followed with a single to left field to bring the winning run to the plate. Penna stepped up as a hero when he smacked a walk-off big fly to left field to bring home three runs to make the Lynx 4-3 victors.

McNair led Rhodes with three more hits in the ballgame, which brought him to six base knocks on the day. Kimbrough tallied two base hits.

Penna brought home three runs in the contest to bring his daily total to six RBI. Five of Penna's six RBI came from his two home runs. Mitchell O'Berry knocked in the only other run in game two for the Lynx.

Chayton Gray had a nice start for Rhodes as he threw 3.1 innings, while only allowing one run, four hits, and striking out three batters. John Fears followed in relief with three innings pitched, striking out two hitters, while allowing zero runs. 

Alex Garrett recorded his fourth victory on the season (4-0). He held the Warriors to two runs, while striking out two batters. Garrett tossed 2.2 innings in the contest.
