Christopher Newport Baseball Wins Fifth Straight With 18-5 Victory at Gallaudet

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Christopher Newport baseball team put up double-digits for the fifth straight game and ran away with an 18-5 win at Gallaudet University (4-8) on Sunday afternoon. The Captains offense set a program record with five triples in the game as part of an onslaught of ten extra-base hits against the Bison as Christopher Newport improved to 9-4 overall this season.

Senior Evan Baer legged out a pair of triples to join Taylor Loudan as the only players in program history with two three-baggers in a game. Loudan accomplished the feet on April 4, 2015 against St. Mary's (Md.). Baer's pair alongside one each for rookies Jonathan Fisher, Eric Lingebach, and Alec Reilly shattered the previous team record of three triples in a game set in 2012 against Blackburn.

The Captains scored early and often in Sunday's non-conference road matchup scoring four runs in the first, two in the second, and three more in the third. The potent attack would continue with multi-run innings in six of the nine frames against Gallaudet. Things got started right off the bat as Conner Clark reached on a bunt single to lead off the game and quickly advanced to third on a throwing error by the pitcher. He raced home on a groundout two batters later for the first run of the game. Later in the inning, Baer blistered his first triple of the game with a shot to deep right center field, chasing home Trey Hicks for another run. After a walk by Michael Martorano, rookie Alec Reilly stepped in an plated two more runs with a double to center field.

The extra-base hits kept coming in the top of the second when Fisher tripled into right field. With two outs, Hicks stepped in and continued his dominant performance this week with his third home run in as many games. The senior outfielder smashed a two-run shot over the left-center field wall to wrap up his performance this week by continuing a seven-game hitting streak. He was 9-for-15 (.600) with 3 HR, 1 3B, 1 2B, 2 BB, 9 RBI, and 8 runs scored.

On the mound, the Captains sent freshman Aidan Henning to the hill to start and the rookie tossed two scoreless with three strikeouts before the pen took over. Senior Teddy Herbert (3-0) earned the win in relief with a pair of perfect frames in the third and fourth, striking out two. Nathan Clements followed with a 1-2-3 fifth inning, striking out a pair as well. From their, Kyle Darmstead, Zachary Ewald, Tucker Keener, and Reilly closed out the game on the mound with one inning each. Reilly struck out three in the ninth in his first career pitching appearance.

Reilly also had a two-run triple in the fourth inning which would break the program record. Lingebach added one more in the fifth, driving in a pair, to add to the new program mark. Reilly finished 2-for-6 with 5 RBI before adding the 1.0 IP, 0 R, 3 K performance on the mound.

The Captains were able to empty the bench and 10 different players logged at least one hit in the game. John Scherr came off the bench to go 2-for-4 with a couple RBI and Nathan Poretz reached base in three of his four plate appearances going 1-for-2 with two walks.

Christopher Newport will return to action on Tuesday, March 10 to wrap up the five-game swing away from Captains Park. They will travel to Bridgewater College for a 3:00 pm first pitch against the Eagles.
