How it Happened
An offensive outburst led the Blue Jays to their fifth straight victory, racking up 13 hits en route to 10 runs in Sunday afternoon's triumph over ninth-ranked Salisbury. Mike EberleAJ King and Mike Ainsworth all had multi-hit games for the Jays while seven other players picked up a hit in the contest. Ainsworth drove in three runs while Chris Festa and Matthew Ritchie both hit two-run homers for JHU.
After Ritchie drew a one-out walk in the top of the first, Festa drove a pitch deep to center, clearing the wall for a two-run bomb, his third of the season. King singled up the middle and advanced on a two-out walk from Ingram before scoring on an RBI single to left from Ainsworth.
With the Jays leading 3-0 after the first half inning, the Sea Gulls used a pair of defensive miscues from Johns Hopkins to narrow the gap. Cameron Hyder reached first on a bunt single to lead things off for Salisbury. Hyder advanced to third as Matthew Dillard threw the ball away on a pick-off attempt. Justin Meekins reached on an error by Ainsworth at first, allowing Hyder to score the first run of the contest for the Sea Gulls. After a single and another throwing error put runners on second and third, Jimmy Monaghan bounced out, but Meekins scored from third to make it 3-2.
The offense picked right back up where it left off for JHU. Eberle started things off with a one-out single up the middle before Ritchie ripped a ball over the wall in right for a two-run shot. With King on second, Austin Sacks cranked an RBI double down the right field line, giving the Jays a 6-2 lead. Hopkins made it 7-2 in the third on an RBI single from Dillon Bowman, scoring James Ingram
The scoring picked back up in the sixth for the Blue Jays, already leading it by five. Back into the starting lineup for the first time since opening weekend, Mark Lopez doubled down the left field line to lead off the inning. Eberle picked up his second hit of the day, a single down the right field line, scoring Lopez to give the Jays an 8-2 lead.
With Brian Linton on to pitch the bottom of the sixth for the Jays, Salisbury got one back. Brandon Bonesteel doubled to lead off the inning followed by Brad Haas getting hit by a pitch. Linton got an out on the next batter, but Bonesteel moved up to third. Linton walked the pinch hitter to load the bases, bringing up a pinch-hit opportunity for Trent Saunders. Saunders grounded out to second, but a run came around to score, making it an 8-3 game.
JHU's final two runs came in the top of the seventh. King led off with a single, moving up to third on a one-out double from Ingram. Ainsworth ripped a double down the line in left, scoring both runners to give the Jays a 10-3 lead and Ainsworth three RBI's on the day.
Brent Peterson loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, forcing the Blue Jays to bring in Jaspar Carmichael with one out in the ninth. Carmichael walked the first batter he faced, making it a 10-4 game, but Bonesteel bounced into a double play, securing the victory for JHU.
