Cougars Cruise Past Fontbonne

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – After picking up a dramatic comeback win yesterday, the Concordia University Chicago Baseball team looked to make it two straight wins to open the spring break trip today. The Cougars would do just that as the offense got going along with a complete pitching effort to propel CUC to a 7-2 win over Fontbonne.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Adam Gregory picked up the win, throwing six shutout innings while striking out seven on just 73 pitches.
  • The Cougar bullpen arms of Chandler Kerr, Cade Laudenschlager and Westin Stutzman threw the final three innings, allowing just one earned run.
  • Matt Fauth had a strong day at the plate going 3-4 with two RBI's.
  • Kevin Garcia recorded two more hits and an RBI to continue his hot start to the week.
  • CUC has now won 13 straight games in Florida dating back to 2018.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After two and a half scoreless CUC broke through in the third. Fauth led off with a bunt single. Matthew Uba followed by ripping a 2-1 pitch into right center for a triple to make it 1-0. One out later Uba came in to score on a groundout to make it 2-0 CUC.
  • CUC added on in the fifth. It was Fauth again with a leadoff single to start the inning. He then stole second and took third on a groundout. He came in to score on a squeeze bunt by Mateo Calle to make it 3-0 Cougars.
  • Gregory cruised through six for CUC. He retired his last ten in a row.
  • CUC broke it open in the sixth. Garry Maynard and Garcia each doubled to make it 4-0. After a Michael Zavoli walk put two on, Fauth singled home a pair to make it 6-0. It then became 7-0 CUC when Fauth stole third and the throw from the catcher sailed into left field.
  • Fontbonne got their only runs of the game in the seventh off of two hits and a CUC error.
