Sewanee Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader with RHIT

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Sewanee baseball team recorded a doubleheader split with the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Saturday in a rematch of former Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) foes. RHIT posted a 6-2 victory in game one before the Tigers forced extra innings and eventually recorded a 4-3 walk-off win in the night cap from Montgomery Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1
-The visitors put two runs on the board after an RBI triple and an RBI single on two of three batters to lead 2-0.

-In the fourth, a homer by Ryan Stachowski extended the lead to 3-0 for RHIT.

-Sewanee dented the scoreboard with an RBI double by Jake Woolard to bring home Shane Smith from first base.

-In the seventh, Woolard came through again for the Tigers, posting a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 3-2. However, the visitors tacked on an insurance run in the eighth and two in the ninth to lead 6-2.

-The Tigers made it interesting in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases. However, the home team would strand the runners on base as a flyout to right field sealed the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2
-In the night cap, the Tigers struck first with an infield base hit by Jared Demkowicz to score Shane Smith.

-The teams did not spend too much time at the plate, as a lot of zeros were placed on the scoreboard. In the fourth, the Fightin' Engineers evened the score at one goal apiece with a base knock up the middle.

-In the bottom half of the frame, the Tigers responded with a fielder's choice by Ben Harper with the bases loaded. After Jack Galanek reached with a base hit up the middle, a Max Murray walk and an infield bunt single by Braxton Swanson, Harper reached on a groundball to second base. Despite Swanson being tagged out on the play, Galanek scored on the play.

-Despite Harper stealing second base, the Tigers left two runners on base, but they reclaimed the lead, 2-1.

-Despite allowing a hit in the fifth and sixth, pitcher Demkowicz was cruising along, looking to secure a complete game as the second game of the twin bill was scheduled for a seven-inning affair. After getting two quick outs, three straight Fightin' Engineers reached base, and thanks to a pinch hit, two-run single by Zach Witonsky, the visitors took a 3-2 advantage.

-Sewanee responded in its last turn at bat in the bottom half of the frame. Down to their final out, Chris McNulty poked a single to right field to even the score at three runs and forced the contest into extra innings.

-Despite a lead-off walk to start the top of the eighth, the next three batters were retired by Holden Shell.

-In the bottom half of the frame, Galanek led off the inning with a hit by pitch. After a base hit by Max Murray hit up the middle, RHIT was forced to make a move on the mound. Following a free pass by Braxton Swanson, Sully McCreery laced a pinch hit, walk-off RBI single to secure the 4-3 victory.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Shane Smith and Jack Galanek each recorded two hits in game one, while Jake Woolard posted both runs batted in.

-Hampton Long (2-1) tossed six innings in his game one start, allowing three earned runs.

-Galanek and Max Murray each posted two hits, while Galanek scored twice in game two.

-Jared Demkowicz posted a no decision despite tossing seven innings in his start, striking out four batters. Of his 82 pitches, 66 were inside the strike zone.

ROSE-HULMAN KEY STATISTICS
-Harris Camp posted two doubles in game one with four hits overall and two RBI, while Ryan Stachowski tacked out three hits and two RBI.

-Luke Buehler (2-0) earned the victory with one run in six innings pitched.

-Josh Mesenbrink and Andy Krajecki recorded two hits each. Krajecki posted two doubles in the night cap.

-Jason Ims allowed five hits in four innings of his start, fanning two. Clayton Mayfield (0-1) allowed the tying and go-ahead run to suffer the loss.

UP NEXT
Sewanee will look for the series win on Sunday from Montgomery Field. Originally scheduled for an 11 a.m. start, the game has been pushed back to noon.
