How It Happened

  • Matt Nickles (2-0) struck out six of the first seven batters he faced over the first two innings. He scattered six hits and he walked two, both in the seventh inning.
  • The Yellow Jackets started the scoring in the bottom of the second. Senior Reece Yeargain (Chester, Va./Benedictine) led off the inning by reaching on an error and came home on a long homer to right by senior Shawn Nickles (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge), his second long ball of the season, to give R-MC a 2-0 advantage.
  • R-MC doubled its lead an inning later. Senior Mike Nickles (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) had a one-out single and advanced to third on a base hit to right by Yeargain. Shawn Nickles hit into a fielder's choice and beat the throw to first to avoid the double play, driving in Mike Nickles from third to make it 3-0. Shawn Nickles moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt and came home on a single to right by junior Kevin Mooney (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) to give the home team a 4-0 lead.
  • In the fifth, Mike Nickles drew a leadoff walk and came in on a double by Mooney as the advantage grew to 5-0.
  • After the Quakers scratched for a run in the sixth, the Yellow Jackets again doubled their score in the eighth. Sophomore Spencer Pietruszynski (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown), senior Daniel Wilkerson (Oxford, N.C./Kerr-Vance Academy) and senior Ryan Duphorn (Erial, N.J./Paul VI) all had RBI singles. Wilkerson scored on an error and Mike Nickles capped the scoring with an RBI double to make the final 10-1.
