HOBOKEN, N.J. – Trailing 4-0 after three innings during its season opener, the William Paterson baseball team (1-0) scored six unanswered runs to rally for a 6-4, 10-inning victory at Stevens (3-2) Feb. 22.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Ducks got on the scoreboard with a solo home run during the bottom of the second inning, then used a homer, RBI-triple and run-scoring single for a 4-0 advantage in the third.
- Junior center fielder Steven DiGirolamo (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) started the fourth with a hit by pitch and wild pitch, and a Carson Weis (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley Regional) single and Steve Yelin (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) groundout resulted in a single run for the Pioneers.
- Junior left fielder Dan Carter (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) launched a fifth-inning pitch over the fence in right-center field, making it a 4-2 margin.
- Consecutive base hits by Weis and Yelin pulled WP to within one, 4-3, in the top of the sixth.
- Down to their final out, the Pioneers used a double to right by senior second baseman Matt Ferrara (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) to plate junior catcher Dylan Habeeb (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) for the tying run in the ninth.
- Weis lifted a one-out pitch to left, clearing the wall to hand WP its first lead of the game at 5-4 during the top of the 10th inning. Yelin delivered an infield single and was replaced by junior pinch runner Frankie Deane (Dumont, N.J./Dumont), and classmate Adrian Alarcon (Belleville, N.J./Belleville) followed with a pinch-hit single to right. A later wild pitch and error scored Deane for an insurance run, 6-4.
