Hampden-Sydney Baseball Falls At Huntingdon 6-3

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Senior captain Matt Spagnolo/Glen Allen collected two hits and an RBI, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 6-3 non-conference baseball decision on the road at Huntingdon College on Tuesday night in Montgomery, Alabama. Senior Cameron Meyers/Benson, N.C. took the pitching setback in late relief for the visiting Tigers (11-4), who had their recent eight-game winning streak stopped against the host Hawks (9-6). H-SC will have a short turnaround with another game scheduled at Piedmont College on Wednesday afternoon, March 11, at 3 p.m. in Demorest, Georgia—please note the time change from the original start time (7 p.m.).

H-SC scored three runs on six hits … scoring one run each in the second, third and seventh innings. The Tigers led 2-1 through three innings and 3-2 through seven, before HC scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning for its come-from-behind home triumph.

In the second, Spagnolo (2-4, RBI) provided a two-out, RBI double to right center field that scored junior Nick Grohowski/Chesterfield (2-5), who had singled to open the at-bat.

In the third, junior Ryan Clawson/Moseley (1-4) singled with one out and later scored an unearned run courtesy of an error on a fielder's choice off the bat of freshman Ryan Boyce/Suffolk (0-4).

In the seventh, freshman Ethan Currin/Toano (0-1, RBI) drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs to score senior Chase Counts/Virginia Beach (0-4). Counts had also walked during the at-bat that featured three walks and a hit batter in favor of the Tigers.

Senior Jonathan Triesler/Chesterfield started on the mound and pitched the first 7.0 solid innings, scattering 10 hits and two runs, both earned, with two strikeouts and no walks. Meyers (0-1) tossed two-thirds of an inning, allowing six hits and four runs, all earned, with one strikeout and no walks. Freshman Colby Owens/Chesapeake retired the only batter he faced with no strikeouts and no walks.

H-SC, winners of 11 of its last 13 games overall, will play the afternoon game on Wednesday at Piedmont before returning to Old Dominion Athletic Conference action at Guilford College on Saturday, March 14, a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. in Greensboro, North Carolina.
