Cougars Outlast Webster in Marathon Game

ST.LEO, Fla. -- Looking to rebound after a tough loss to Keystone yesterday, the Concordia University Chicago Baseball team took on the Webster Gorloks today at St.Leo University. The Cougars and Gorloks resumed the game that was suspended at GCS on March 1 to open the day. CUC was able to scrape a run across in the top of the 12th of a game that was resumed in the top of the tenth to win 2-1. The Cougars then won a wild game two in which the Cougars would come up big in the 11th inning to down Webster 15-11 to improve to 4-3 on the season.

 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Bryce Vincent had his best day as a Cougar. The freshman went 5-6 on the day with five runs driven in.
  • Mateo Calle got going, the senior went 3-6 with four runs scored.
  • Mike Tobin picked up the win for CUC in the resumed game. He worked 1.1 innings and did not allow a hit.
  • The 14 hits were a season high as a team.
  • Matthew Uba went 2-5 with four RBI's. He hit a game tying two run homer in the eighth.
  • Noah Dressler picked up the game two win. The senior worked 3.2 innings, allowing just three hits and one unearned run.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • GAME 1:  Tied 1-1 when play resumed in the top of the tenth, the Cougars escaped trouble in the 11th to keep it a 1-1 game. CUC broke the tie in the 12th. Brody Mariotti led off with a double. Two outs later Brayden Benavides singled up the middle to give CUC the 2-1 lead.
  • Game 2: CUC struck in the top of the first. Calle led off with a single to center. Two outs and a Webster error later a Kevin Garcia single through the left side allowed two runs to score.
  • The Cougars added on in the third. With one on and one out Garry Maynard singled to left to make it 3-0. CUC then loaded the bases and scored on a Vincent single and a Matt Fauth hit by pitch.
  • Webster broke through with two runs on four hits in the bottom of the third.
  • CUC manufactured a run in the sixth with a sac fly by Mariotti to make it 6-2 Cougars.
  • The Gorloks rallied in the bottom of the sixth. They scored six runs on four hits along with a CUC error to take an 8-6 lead.
  • Concordia tied the game in the seventh. With one out and one on Uba launched a line drive over the right field wall to tie the game at eight.
  • CUC took an 11-8 lead in the eighth. With no outs CUC loaded the bases. A sac fly followed to make it 9-8. CUC then scored two more on an Uba single through the right side.
  • Webster answered once again, scoring two in the eighth and one in the ninth to force extras.
  • The Cougars broke the game open in the 11th. With the bases loaded and no one out Michael Zavoli was hit by a pitch. Vincent followed with his biggest hit of the day, a bases clearing double down the left field line to make it 15-11.
  • Webster got the tying run to the plate in the bottom half but Dressler was able to get a lineout to end the four hour and 45 minute marathon.

  • The Cougars will have an off day tomorrow before resuming the back half of their trip on Thursday. They will take on Rowan University at 9:15am (EST) from Winter Haven, Fla.
