RussMatt Finale Brings Close to WPI’s Truncated Season

Auburndale, FL --- The 2020 WPI baseball season came to a close on Saturday afternoon when the Engineers were swept by Anna Maria in their final doubleheader at the RussMatt Invitational.

The Engineers finished the season 4-6 overall and recognized the careers of seniors Dillon Bordeleau (Cranston, RI), Nick Colucci (Lynnfield, MA), Kyle Foley (Watertown, MA), David Larson (Port Tobacco, MD), Tyrone Patterson (Upper Marlboro, MD), Keith Scales (Upper Marlboro, MD), Nick Tagaris (New City, NY), Kyle Wood (Hauppage, NY), Nick Wright (Foxboro, MA) and graduate student Benjamin Chaffee (Franklin, MA).

Anna Maria's season also comes to an end today with the AMCATS posting an 8-3 record.

Game 1: Anna Maria 3, WPI 0

Shutout for the first time all year, WPI was held to three hits, with only a Patterson double going for extra bases.

Larson struck out four and allowed just two earned runs in his final career start, a complete game seven-inning effort. The 2019 All-American also reached base with a single, as did Wood, the second baseman.

On the mound, Jack Marzec (Northbridge, MA) was superb for the Amcats, striking out nine batters over seven shutout innings while improving to 3-1.

Anna Maria scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings. Designated hitter Jarrod Mariflote (Framingham, MA) was 2-3 with a run scored.

Game 2: Anna Maria 19, WPI 7

A wild finish to the season saw WPI lead twice in the first two frames and again after scoring four runs in the top of the fourth, but the Amcats exploded for nine runs in the bottom of that inning and six more in the sixth to blow the contest wide open.

Jordan DeDonato (Danvers, MA) cleared the bases with a three-run triple to put WPI up 6-4. DeDonato was on base three times in the game, and scored one of two runs in the top of the first as WPI took a 2-0 lead on a two-run error off the bat of Michael Fraser (Mashpee, MA).

The Amcats answered back when Kosta Drosidis (Holden, MA) matched DeDonato's feat with a bases-loaded triple of his own to jump-start the nine-run fourth. Mariflote followed later in the inning with a two-run single before Alex Sorenti-Burns (Sagamore Beach, MA) put an exclamation mark on the game with a three-run homer to left field.

Martin McCormack (Quincy, MA) was 2-4 with a pair of runs scored while Larson scored twice as well, taking three walks in the contest. Patterson and Frank D'Alessio (Morganville, NJ) each had a hit and scored a run.

Six different pitchers threw an inning for WPI, as seniors Colucci, Bordeleau, Wood, Scales, Tagaris and Foley all got to take the mound for a final frame.
