#15 Marietta falls to Susquehanna in season finale

PORT CHARLOTTE, Florida — No. 15 ranked Marietta College fell to Susquehanna University by the score of 11-2 Sunday (March 15) afternoon at The Snowbird Classic. The Pioneers finish their shortened season with a 9-3 overall record. The River Hawks finish with a 6-5 mark.

"We dug ourselves a hole and couldn't get out of it," Marietta head coach Brian Brewer said. "Susquehanna swung the bats well today and we made some mistakes both defensively and on the base paths that took us out of some innings."

The River Hawks plated a run in the top of the second and then added two more in the fourth and five in the fifth building and 8-1 lead. A three-run double from Justin Miller in the seventh put the game away for Susquehanna.

Marietta scored an unearned run in the fourth. Jared Weiss reached on a two-out single to right field and moved to second when Isaac Danford walked. Brady Cottom grounded to the first baseman but his throw was wild allowing Weiss to come around and score.

The Pioneers' final run came in the eighth when Rodreco Rachel led off with a triple into the left field corner. Logan Vietmeier followed with a ground ball to third. The throw to first was off line allowing Rachel to score.

Susquehanna starter Nathan Madden threw four innings before leaving with an apparent leg injury. He allowed on unearned run on two hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Bobby Grigas (2-0) got the win after working four innings and giving up one run on five hits with five strikeouts. Jake Ramezzana pitched the ninth.

Dalton Wiggins (1-1) started and took the loss for Marietta. He pitched four innings and gave up six runs, five earned, on six hits. Wiggins walked one and struck out three. Gino Sabatine allowed five runs on seven hits in two and one-third innings. Sam Mathews tossed the final two and two-thirds innings and gave up two hits and struck out six.

Weiss finished 3-for-3 at the plate for Marietta.

Cottom and Seamus Kenneally are the only seniors on the 2020 roster. Wiggins also finished his career in the pinstripes as he will be moving on to West Virginia University to complete his education as part of a 3-2 program between the two schools.
