Hampden-Sydney Splits Two Games At Methodist (NC)

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Senior captain Ryan Clawson/Moseley had two RBIs in the first game, while junior Ethan Badin/Richmond had two RBIs in the second game, as Hampden-Sydney College split a season-opening and non-conference baseball doubleheader on the road at Methodist University on Saturday in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Sophomore Owen Tappy/Charlotte, NC gained the pitching win in relief in the 2-1 opening game victory for the visiting Tigers (1-1), while junior Nick Graziano/Virginia Beach took the mound setback in the 4-2 nightcap against the host Monarchs (1-4).

In game one, H-SC scored two runs on four hits … scoring one run in the first inning, and the game-winning run in the ninth.

In the first, Badin (2-4) led-off with a single to right center and later crossed the plate on an RBI ground ball out off the bat of Clawson (1-4, 2 RBIs).

In the ninth, sophomore captain Ryan Boyce/Suffolk (1-3) opened the at-bat with a walk, advanced to second on a throwing error, and moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt, before scoring what proved to be the winning run when Clawson provided his RBI single to center.

Junior Trenton Tiller/Powhatan started the first game and pitched the first 6.0 solid innings, scattering six hits and one run, earned, with three strikeouts and one walk. Tappy (1-0) earned the victory with the final 3.0 scoreless innings, yielding one hit with two strikeouts and two walks.

In game two, H-SC scored two runs on nine hits … scoring one run in the third inning and one run in the fifth.

In the third, sophomore Tymothy Hart/Powhatan (2-3) singled to right with one out, stole second base and scored courtesy of an RBI single by Badin (2-4, 2 RBIs). In the fifth, junior Trey Karnes/Mechanicsville (1-4) singled to left to open the frame, advanced to second on a ground ball out, and scored on an RBI double from Badin.

Graziano (0-1) started and pitched the first 4.0 innings, allowing five hits and three runs, two earned, with four strikeouts and three walks. Junior Jason Covaney/Williamsburg tossed 1.0 inning, yielding two hits and one run, earned, with no strikeouts and no walks. Sophomore Declan Kent/Charlottesville pitched a scoreless inning with two strikeouts and one walk. Junior Kieran Conway/Chesapeake tossed a scoreless inning, as well, allowing one hit with two strikeouts and no walks. Sophomore Russell Bowles/Moseley also pitched a scoreless inning with no strikeouts and one walk.

H-SC is scheduled to play its home opener in a non-conference game against Christopher Newport University on Wednesday, March 3, beginning at 3 p.m. on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium.
