BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Christopher Newport baseball team built a 6-1 lead early and held on for a 6-5 road win at Bridgewater (0-1) on Wednesday afternoon. Senior Josh Husby (1-0) spun his second consecutive excellent start, allowing three runs, one earned, over 7.0 innings of work and senior outfielder Conner Clark smashed his first career home run in the win.

With the victory, the Captains win streak runs to four as they improve to 5-1 overall this year.

The runs started to come in the top of the second inning as rookie Daniel Elliott led off with a hit-by-pitch and stole second. He scored the game's first run when fellow freshman Scott Crosson delivered an RBI double to right field. Crosson would also come home on a bunt single from Ethan Weaver two batters later after Bridgewater threw the ball away and allowed him to advance an extra base. It was the start of a great day for Crosson, who led the Captains offense going 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and a run scored.

The home team cut the lead in half, 2-1, with a single run in the second, but the Captains started to extend the lead in the next inning. Kyle Schofield walked and advanced to second when Michael Martorano singled into left field. With two outs, Crosson stepped in again and singled up the middle, driving in Schofield to give the Captains a 3-1 lead.

Weaver continued his strong start to the season with another single to lead off the fourth inning. He promptly advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches scored on an RBI single by Eric O'Brien. After Schofield walked, Martorano stepped in and added an RBI single to the docket and the lead grew to four, 5-1.

In the top of the sixth, the Captains scoring would come to a close in rousing fashion when Clark led off the inning with a blast. In 465 career at-bats prior to his sixth inning appearance, Clark had never gone yard, but in at-bat number 466, the 5-10 senior blistered a line drive no doubter over the right center field wall for his first career homer. The rocket shot would prove to be the difference in the game as Bridgewater scored single runs in each of the last four innings to close within one for the final, 6-5.

On the mound, Husby cruised through a quality start to pick up the first win of his senior season and the 15th of his career. He is one shy of the top-ten all-time at Christopher Newport held by Sean Chitsaz and Tab Pabst with 16 career victories. Gray Goodrich gave up just one hit and struck out one in a single inning of work out of the bullpen and rookie Matt Gaither came on in the ninth for the save opportunity. The freshman earned his first career save despite giving up a run on two hits.

Crosson, Martorano, and Weaver each went 2-for-3 in the game and Martorano added a walk. Clark was 1-for-2 with two walks, reaching base three times in four plate appearances with a stolen base adding to his round-tripper.

The Captains will return to action this Friday, March 12 at 25th-ranked North Carolina Wesleyan College(8-2) with first pitch slated for 3:00 p.m. in Rocky Mount, N.C.
