W&J sweeps Bethany to open 2021 season

BETHANY, W.Va. -- Senior first baseman Adam Moore (Olean, N.Y./Archbishop Walsh) slugged a pair of home runs and collected six RBI in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep of Bethany College on Saturday afternoon. 

Game 1 - W&J 10, Bethany 4

Evan Sante (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) opened the scoring with a solo home run in the top of the first inning. W&J added six runs in the third inning, which included a grand slam by Moore. The grand slam helped chase Bethany starter Tyler Alworth after just 3.0 innings of work. 

Moore's big day continued an inning later, as the senior produced a two-run single to score Peter Kalinski (Washington, D.C./Saint John's College) and Sante. That hit gave Moore six RBI and W&J a 9-0 advantage. An RBI groundout by Nate Rush (Wheeling, W.Va./The Linsly School) extended the W&J lead to 10-0 in the seventh inning. The Bison tallied four runs in the bottom of the frame to close the scoring at 10-4. 

Henry Litman (Marietta, Ga./Walton) earned the victory on the mound. Litman allowed three runs on four hits in 6.2 innings. Litman struck out six and issued just one walk. 

Moore, Rush and Sante recorded two hits apiece to lead the offense in game one. W&J recorded nine hits and drew eight walks offensively. 

Game 2 - W&J 5, Bethany 1

Kalinski opened the scoring in game two with a solo blast in the top of the first. Alworth tied the score for Bethany when he connected on a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning. 

Sam Quinn (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and Jason Gregovits (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) tallied RBI singles in the top of the fourth to spot W&J a 3-1 lead. Moore doubled the Presidents lead with a two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning. 

Horvat tossed 7.0 strong innings in which he allowed just one run on three hits. The sophomore right-hander struck out nine and walked none in the victory. 

Kamden Kautz (Oro Valley, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge) and Michael Zito (Nashville, Tenn./Hume-Fogg) combined to pitch 2.0 innings of scoreless relief out of the W&J bullpen. 

Adam Morris (South Park, Pa./South Park), Logan Scheider (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny), Moore and Gregovits registered multi-hit efforts in the nightcap. 

W&J and Bethany will conclude their four-game set on Sunday, March 14 at Ross Memorial Park. First pitch of game one is set for 1 p.m.
