WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team completed a four-game sweep of Bethany College with a pair of wins Sunday afternoon at Ross Memorial Park. The sweep helped veteran head coach Jeff Mountain reach 500 wins for his coaching career.

Game 1 - W&J 7, Bethany 1

Nick Drake (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) tossed 7.0 shutout innings in a 7-1 game one victory. The senior righthander scattered six hits and struck out three as he collected the win.

The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when W&J tallied a pair of unearned runs to take a 2-0 lead. Back-to-back RBI doubles by Tyler Horvat (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) and Nate Rush (Wheeling, W.Va./The Linsly School) extended the lead to 4-0 in the fifth inning. The lead extended to 5-0 when Logan Scheider (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) drew a bases loaded walk. The Presidents tacked on two more runs in the seventh before Bethany broke up the shutout in the eighth with a run.

Robby Heberle (Georgetown, Pa./South Side Beaver) and Jameson Campbell (Painesville, Ohio/Painesville Riverside) combined to record the final six outs in relief of Drake.

Horvat and Michael Zito (Nashville, Tenn./Hume-Fogg) finished with two hits apiece in an eight-hit attack for W&J in the opener.

Game 2 - W&J 19, Bethany 4

Game two was all Presidents, as the Red and Black plated 19 runs on 18 hits. After seeing Bethany put up a four-spot in the top of the first inning, W&J answered with a single run in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by Adam Moore (Olean, N.Y./Archbishop Walsh). Luke Virag (New Kensington, Pa./Burrell) laced an RBI single to right field in the third to cut the deficit to 4-2.

The Presidents put a crooked number on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning to take the lead for good. W&J scored seven runs in the frame to take a 9-4 advantage. The big blow in the inning was a three-run bases clearing double by Alec Jackson (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson). Later in the inning, an RBI double by Roman Samson (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) brought in Horvat.

An RBI double by Evan Sante (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) made the score 11-4 in the fifth. He later scored on a groundout to extend the lead to 12-4.

W&J posted another seven run inning in the bottom of the sixth. Sante had a two-run single in the frame. Joe Lehner (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic) and Virag tacked on RBI singles as well in the inning.

Sante posted a 3-for-4 effort in game two with four runs scored and three RBI. Moore finished off a big weekend with a 3-for-4 effort and two RBI in game two. Samson continued his good work at the plate, as the freshman went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles.

Mason Kolbe (Bradenton, Fla./Out-of-Door Academy) earned the victory in relief. Kolbe posted two scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts.
