Hampden-Sydney Splits Two Games Against Ferrum

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Junior Trey Karnes/Mechanicsville hit his first collegiate home run and had two RBIs in the second game, adding two hits and one RBI in the first game, as Hampden-Sydney College split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader against Ferrum College on Saturday on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Junior Nic Graziano/Virginia Beach gained the pitching win in the 7-5 nightcap that witnessed the home team rallying from an early 5-0 deficit, while classmate Trenton Tiller/Powhatan took the mound setback in the 5-2 opener for the host Tigers (4-4, 2-2) against the visiting Panthers (2-6, 1-1).

In game two, H-SC scored seven runs on 10 hits … scoring one run each in the second, third, fourth and sixth innings, as well as three runs in the fifth. FC scored five runs on eight hits—plating all five runs in the second inning.

In the second, Karnes (1-4, 2 RBIs) opened the at-bat with a no-doubt solo shot down the left field line for his first collegiate homer. In the third, senior captain Ryan Clawson/Moseley (1-2, RBI) walked with two outs and scored from first on an RBI single down the right field line by sophomore Ethan Currin/Toano (1-2, RBI). In the fourth, sophomore captain Ryan Boyce/Suffolk (2-4, RBI) tripled down the right field line to open the at-bat and crossed the plate on an RBI ground ball out from junior Mark Evans/Yorktown (1-3, 2 RBIs). In the sixth, junior Ethan Badin/Richmond (0-4) walked with one out, stole second base and scored on a two-out, RBI single to right field by Clawson.

In the three-run fifth, freshman Lucas Burnette/Hurt (2-5) doubled down the right field line to begin the at-bat and later scored on a fielding error at second base off the bat of Karnes. Currin, who had walked, crossed the plate when Boyce provided a run-scoring infield single to third base. Karnes would also score via a sacrifice fly RBI from Evans.

Sophomore Tymothy Hart/Powhatan (2-4) added two hits in the second game, as well.

Graziano (2-1) started and pitched the first 5.0 innings for the victory, allowing six hits and five runs, all earned, with five strikeouts and four walks. Sophomore Owen Tappy/Charlotte, NC pitched 2.0 scoreless innings, yielding no hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Junior Kieran Conway/Chesapeake tossed a scoreless inning, allowing two hits with one strikeout and no walks, while sophomore Russell Bowles/Moseley tossed a scoreless final inning for his second save on the season, yielding no hits with one strikeout and no walks.

In game one, H-SC scored two runs on nine hits … scoring one run each in the sixth and ninth innings. FC scored five runs on 11 hits … scoring one run each in the third and fifth innings, and three runs in the eighth.

In the sixth, Boyce (0-3) reached on a fielding error in center field and advanced to third base on the play, before scoring on an RBI double down the left field line by Karnes (2-3, RBI). In the ninth, Hart (1-4) was safe at first on an infield single to shortstop with one out, and later crossed the plate courtesy of a sacrifice fly RBI off the bat of Burnette (0-4, RBI).

Badin (3-5) had three hits in the first game for the Tigers, and Hart threw-out a runner at the plate from right field in the third inning, as well.

Tiller (0-1) started and pitched the first 7.2 innings, scattering eight hits and three runs, all earned, with four strikeouts and no walks. Freshman Aidan Williams/Suffolk pitched the final 1.1 innings, allowing three hits and two runs, both unearned, with one strikeout and no walks.

H-SC is scheduled to play at home again in a non-conference game against Mary Baldwin University on Tuesday, March 16, at 4 p.m. at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium.
