YORK, PA – The Spartan saw their school-record win streak come to an end on Sunday as Widener captured a split in game two of Sunday's MAC Commonwealth doubleheader in York. The Spartans won game one 8-1 to extend their streak to nine before the Pride registered a come-from-behind 5-3 win in the nightcap.
The Spartans are now 9-1 overall and 7-1 in the MAC Commonwealth. Widener now sits at 4-4 and 1-3 in the league.
Game One
Hits: York 13, Widener 4
Errors: York 0, Widener 3
2B: York 3, Widener 1
3B: York 0, Widener 0
HR: York 1, Widener 0
WP: Robert Chaney (2-0) LP: Joey Norton (1-1)
How It Happened:
• The Pride, much like they did on Saturday, jumped out to an early lead. Widener started the second with a double from Stephen Posner to left center to lead off the frame. He moved to third on a balk and scored on a one-out Aaron Nuble single down the left field line. Nuble stole second before Greg Elfreth walked. The Pride pulled off a double steal to put runners at second and third with one out. Spartan third baseman Craig Wiley then pulled off a great play as he nailed Nuble at the plate on a ground ball to third. That enabled Spartan starter Robert Chaney to get out of the inning allowing just one run.
• The Spartans tied the game in the bottom of the second as Jack Barry doubled and scored on a Jimmy Wiegers' RBI single up the middle to draw the Spartans even.
• York struck again in the third. With two outs and two on, Barry was down in the count 0-2. He worked the count to 2-2 before hitting a rocket home run to left center to put York up 4-1.
• Chaney was brilliant after his rough second inning. The Spartan lefty retired 11 straight from the last hitter in the third through the top of the seventh. His teammates got him two more runs on a wild pitch and error in the fifth and two more in the seventh on an Austin Denlinger sacrifice fly and a Luke Turner RBI double for the final 8-1 margin of victory.
Spartan Leaders
Senior lefty Robert Chaney was outstanding as he tossed his first complete game as a Spartan … Chaney threw seven innings, allowed one run on four hits with seven strikeouts and a pair of walks as he improved to 2-0 … offensively, Brandon White banged out a season-high three hits as he also scored a pair of runs … Jack Barry continued his early season tear as he went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI including his conference best fifth home run of the year … Craig Wiley, Joe Capobianco, and Jimmy Wiegers each added a pair of hits.
Game Two
Hits: York 9, Widener 12
Errors: York 2, Widener 4
2B: York 1, Widener 1
3B: York 0, Widener 0
HR: York 0, Widener 0
WP: Jake Good (2-0) LP: Conor Miller (0-1)
How It Happened:
• For the fourth time in the four-game series, Widener jumped out to a lead in the game. This time, the Pride got an Anthony Boccio RBI double to put Widener up 1-0 after half an inning of play.
• York tied the game in the second as Jimmy Wiegers drew a two out walk. Jayden Cowan reached on a Widener error and freshman Brett DeWees made the error hurt with a line drive since to center to score Wiegers, knotting the game at one.
• Widener errors made the Spartans' two run fourth inning possible. Jack Barry got on base via a two-base error to lead off the inning. Wiegers got a one-out single to put runners at the corners. Jayden Cowan singled softly to center, scoring Barry to give York a 2-1 lead. Craig Wiley eventually plated Wiegers courtesy of a sacrifice fly to put the Green and White up 3-1.
• Widener opened the top of the fifth with back-to-back hits from Aaron Nuble and Alex Savkov to put runners at the corners with no outs. Greg Elfreth than hit a hard drag bunt that allowed Nuble to score on the safety squeeze, cutting the Spartan lead to 3-2. Brandon White then made the defensive play of the game as he threw Savkov out at the plate on a Brandon Reis single to right. Spartan starter Josh Mann got a ground out to temporarily preserve the one-run Spartan advantage.
• The Pride threatened in the seventh but a caught stealing by freshman catcher Brett DeWees and a ground out to first short-circuited the Widener rally. Unfortunately for York, Widener didn't miss their opportunity in the eighth. After a single to lead off the inning, the Spartans committed an error on a force play and the Pride made that miscue hurt as Anthony Boccio singled to left to tie the game at three. Widener then loaded the bases with no outs. Reliever Conor Miller got a pair of strikeouts as he was on the cusp of getting out of it. However, Andrew Yates hit a first pitch from Miller through the left side for a two-run single, giving Widener the 5-3 lead.
• The Spartans got a Wiegers double to left center to open the eighth but he would be left stranded as York headed to the ninth down two. Widener reliever Jake Good surrendered a one out walk in the bottom of the ninth but it wouldn't hurt him as he earned the victory with 3.1 innings of shutout relief work to improve to 2-0. The Spartans stranded a season high 12 runners on base in the loss.
Spartan Leaders
Junior righty Josh Mann tied a career-high with 6.1 innings of work as he allowed two runs on seven hits with a walk and two strikeouts in the no-decision … Jimmy Wiegers was on base all four times in game two as he was 2-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored … freshman catcher Brett DeWees set a new career standard as he was 3-for-4 with one RBI … Jayden Cowan and Craig Wiley each had a hit and an RBI in the game.
Notes
