Montclair, NJ - Catcher Anthony Guarino smacked a bases-loaded single to drive in the winning run as Montclair State scored three times in the bottom of the 11th of the nightcap for an 11-10 victory and a sweep of New Jersey City University at Yogi Berra Stadium on Thursday evening. The Red Hawks won the opener, 12-3.

Jason Moore belted a home run in the opener and Christopher Walker collected three RBI in the first game as the Red Hawks improved to 6-1 following the non-conference twinbill. MSU was making its first appearance at home since March 5 of last year against Yeshiva.

Ricky Voss homered in each game of the doubleheader for the Gothic Knights (2-7), who held two-run leads in each of the last two innings of the second games.

New Jersey City grabbed an 8-6 lead in the top of the 10th inning as Leo Colon doubled down the left field line with two outs scoring Elijah Colon and Jimmy Vizzoni. Montclair would tie it up in the bottom of the inning on a misplayed sacrifice fly by Brody Labbe and an RBI single by Joe Norton knotting the game up at 8-8.

But the Gothic Knights came right back with two more in the top of the 11th. Voss singled and Juan Pena followed with a double. After a fly out, Justin Moreno ripped a double up the gap in right-center scoring both as NJCU moved back in front 10-8.

In the bottom of the inning, Andrew Ollwerther led off with a single and Michael Murphy walked. Eric Havner laid down a sacrifice that was mishandled loading the bases. Sam Angelo was hit by a pitch forcing home a run to make it 10-9. Brad Edwards worked out a full-count walk to tie the game and set the stage for Guarino's heroics. After getting ahead in the count, Guarino sent a pitch back through the middle for the winning run, setting off a Red Hawk celebration.

The comeback made a winner out of freshman Daniel Pepe (1-0), who got his first career victory after working the top of the 11th inning. He struck out two. Aaron Ayers (1-1) took the loss for NJCU as he went the final four innings allowing five runs and five hits with nine strikeouts.

Ollwerther finished 3-for-6 with four RBI, including a bases-clearing double in the third that gave Montclair a 3-1 lead. Murphy and Moore each had two hits.

In the opener, Montclair tallied nine runs in the first three innings. Peter Cosentino, Walker and Angelo each collected RBIs in the first with Walker collecting a second in the second inning on a base hit through the left side. Guarino lofted a sac fly with Eric Havner, Cosentino and Norton all driving in a run for a 9-0 lead.

Righthander E.J. Melendez made that hold up as he went the first five innings for the victory. Melendez allowed four hits and two runs, striking out three. Nicholas Sefick tossed three innings allowing a run and four hits with Kyle Seickel closing out the game with a scoreless ninth.

Walker finished 4-for-4 at the plate with Cosentino going 3-for-4. Havner and Angelo had two hits apiece.

Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, March 27 taking on Stockton University in a doubleheader at Yogi Berra Stadium. First pitch of the non-conference contest is set for 3:00 pm.
