HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Junior Ethan Badin/Richmond had two hits and two RBIs, while senior captains Ryan Clawson/Moseley and Matt Muehleck/Martinsville each added one RBI, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 7-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball shutout victory past Virginia Wesleyan University on Thursday on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Sophomore Justin Woodall/Mechanicsville started on the mound and earned the pitching triumph for the host Tigers (6-6, 3-4 ODAC) against the visiting Marlins (2-10, 2-3 ODAC) with seven strong innings and a career-high eight strikeouts.
H-SC had seven runs on nine hits with no errors … scoring two runs in the fourth inning, one in the seventh and four more runs in the eighth. VWU had no runs on four hits with two errors.
In the fourth, junior Trey Karnes/Mechanicsville (0-2) was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and moved to third on an infield single by sophomore captain Ryan Boyce/Suffolk (2-4). Karnes crossed the plate when sophomore Jay Beavers/Alexandria (1-4) reached base on throwing error, and Boyce scored when Muehleck (0-3, RBI) provided a sacrifice bunt RBI.
In the seventh, Badin (2-4, 2 RBIs) was hit by a pitch with one out and later scored on an RBI single to center field by Clawson (1-5, RBI).
In the eighth, Boyce singled and advanced to second on a walk to junior Max Lipscomb/Virginia Beach (0-0), who was pinch-hitting, and both advanced another base when Beavers reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Badin added a two-run single to left field with two outs that cleared the bases—Beavers crossing the plate all the way from first after a fielding error in left. Following a single by freshman Lucas Burnette/Hurt (2-4), Badin scored the final run courtesy of a wild pitch.
Woodall (2-0) tossed the first 7.0 scoreless innings, yielding just three hits with a career-high eight strikeouts and two walks. Sophomore Owen Tappy/Charlotte, NC pitched 1.0 scoreless inning, allowing one hit with one strikeout and no walks. Junior Kieran Conway/Chesapeake pitched the final scoreless inning, yielding no hits with one strikeout and no walks, as well.
H-SC is scheduled to play at home again on Sunday, March 28, hosting ODAC opponent Guilford (NC) for a doubleheader at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium beginning at 12 p.m.
