Hampden-Sydney Falls On The Road At Lynchburg 7-4

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Junior Trey Karnes/Mechanicsville had two hits and one RBI, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 7-4 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball road decision at the University of Lynchburg on Tuesday in Lynchburg. Junior Kieran Conway/Chesapeake took the pitching setback in relief for the visiting Tigers (6-7, 3-5 ODAC) against the host Hornets (12-8, 5-2 ODAC).

H-SC had four runs on six hits with three errors … scoring one run in the fifth inning, one in the sixth and two runs in the eighth. Lynchburg had seven runs on six hits with one error … scoring two runs in the fifth, two runs in the seventh and three runs in the decisive eighth.

In the fifth, junior Max Lipscomb/Virginia Beach (1-3) doubled to right center field with one out, advanced to third on a ground ball out, and scored courtesy of a two-out fielding error by the pitcher.

In the sixth, senior captain Ryan Clawson/Moseley (1-4) doubled to left center field with two outs, and promptly crossed the plate when Karnes (2-4, RBI) followed with a run-scoring single to right center. Sophomore Jay Beavers/Alexandria (1-3, RBI) added a double down the left field line in the seventh, but was stranded at third.

In the eighth, Clawson walked to open the at-bat, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and moved to third on a single to right field by Karnes. Karnes stole second base, and Lipscomb loaded the bases with one out when he was hit by a pitch. Beavers drew a walk that allowed Clawson to cross the plate, and Karnes scored on an RBI ground ball from freshman Julian Franks-Pollock/Virginia Beach (0-4, RBI).

Junior Trenton Tiller/Powhatan started and pitched the first 2.0 scoreless innings, yielding one hit with five strikeouts and no walks. Sophomore Justin Woodall/Mechanicsville pitched 2.1 innings, allowing two hits and two runs, both earned, with two strikeouts and two walks. Freshman Aidan Williams/Suffolk tossed 1.2 scoreless innings, yielding no hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Sophomore Owen Tappy/Charlotte, NC pitched 1.0 inning, allowing one hit and two runs, one earned, with one strikeout and no walks. Conway (0-2) pitched the final 1.0 inning, allowing two hits and three runs, all earned, with no strikeouts and three walks.

H-SC is scheduled to play at home again on Friday, April 2, hosting ODAC opponent Eastern Mennonite University for a doubleheader at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium beginning at 12 p.m.
