HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Senior captain Matt Muehleck/Martinsville drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 10th inning to score classmate and fellow captain Ryan Clawson/Moseley with the winning run in thrilling walk-off fashion in the second game, Clawson had four hits and three RBIs in the first game, and junior Trey Karnes/Mechanicsville hit home runs in both games, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader sweep of Guilford (NC) College on Sunday on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark - Wurdeman Stadium. Sophomore Russell Bowles/Moseley earned the pitching win in the 8-7 nightcap for the host Tigers (9-8, 6-6), while sophomore Owen Tappy/Charlotte, NC gained the mound triumph in the 15-5 opener against the visiting Quakers (1-9, 1-9).

In game two, H-SC scored eight runs on 13 hits with three errors … scoring two runs in the second, one in the third, three in the fifth, one in the sixth and one in the decisive 10th. GC scored seven runs on 11 hits with four errors … scoring one run in the first, two in the second, one in the fourth, two in the sixth and one in the eighth.

In the second, sophomore Jay Beavers/Alexandria (2-5) doubled to left field to open the at-bat, and freshman Trent Jones/Virginia Beach (1-1, 2 RBIs) walked with one out. After Beavers advanced on a wild pitch, Jones stole second and both runners crossed the plate when Muehleck (1-4, 2 RBIs) singled to left field and was thrown out at second when trying to stretch it into a double. In the third, Clawson (3-6) singled and later scored on a bases-loaded walk to Jones.

In the fifth, freshman Tillman Butler/Culpeper (1-2) singled and scored on an RBI single by Jones, and Jones later crossed the plate via a throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt. Muehleck, who had reached on another throwing error, also scored courtesy of a sacrifice fly RBI from freshman Lucas Burnette/Hurt (1-3, RBI). In the sixth, Karnes (1-5, RBI) blasted his second homer of the day, and third of the season, over the fence in left center field.

In the extra 10th, Clawson singled, moved to second via a throwing error on a fielder's choice play and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Butler. Following an intentional walk to load the bases, Muehleck drew another walk to force Clawson across the plate with the game-winning run. Junior Max Lipscomb/Virginia Beach (2-5) added two hits in the nightcap, as well.

Bowles (1-0) pitched the final 3.0 innings for the victory—the first of his collegiate career—scattering two hits and one run, earned, with one strikeout and one walk as the last of six pitchers used by the Tigers in the contest.

In game one, H-SC scored a 15 runs—tying its season-high—on 14 hits with one error … scoring two runs in the first, one in the sixth, five in the seventh and seven in the eighth. GC scored five runs on eight hits with two errors … scoring one run in the second, two in the sixth and two in the eighth.

In the first, sophomore captain Ryan Boyce/Suffolk (0-5, RBI) reached on a fielder's choice and crossed the plate ahead of Karnes (2-5, 2 RBIs), who slammed his first homer of the day over the fence in left center field. In the sixth, senior captain Nick Grohowski/Chesterfield (0-3) reached on a fielder's choice and scored on an RBI double down the left field line by Jones (3-5, 3 RBIs).

In the seventh, Lipscomb (1-2) walked and later scored when Boyce reached on fielding error in center field. Burnette (0-4) also walked and later scored when Clawson (4-4, 3 RBIs) also drew a walk with the bases loaded. Boyce, Karnes and Clawson each crossed the plate when Beavers (2-4, 2 RBIs) singled up the middle and advanced two bases courtesy of a throwing error on the play.

In the eighth, Muehleck (1-4, RBI) walked and sophomore Tymothy Hart/Powhatan (1-1) singled before stealing second, and both scored on a two-run single through the left side by Clawson. Boyce, who also walked, crossed the plate on a run-scoring single by Beavers, and Clawson and Beavers scored on a two-run infield single by Jones. Grohowski, who walked, as well, scored on an RBI double to right center field from Muehleck, and Jones closed out the scoring when freshman Cameron Shields/Scottsville (0-0, RBI) drew a bases-loaded walk.

Sophomore Justin Woodall/Mechanicsville started and pitched the first 5.2 innings, scattering four hits and three runs, all earned, with a career-high nine strikeouts and two walks. Tappy (3-1) tossed 2.1 innings for the win in relief, allowing four hits and two runs, one earned, with one strikeout and no walks. Junior Reese White/Lincoln, DE pitched the final 1.0 scoreless inning, yielding no hits with no strikeouts and two walks in his first collegiate appearance.

H-SC is scheduled to play at home again on Wednesday, April 7, hosting ODAC opponent and archrival Randolph-Macon College at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium beginning at 4 p.m. The Yellow Jackets were ranked 14th nationally in the latest D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25.
