Conway, Ark. - After splitting games on day one at Hendrix College, Rhodes College baseball secured the series win going extra innings in game one on Saturday to win 5-3 in nine before posting a 14-7 victory in game two. The wins put Rhodes at 13-10 on the season.
Game 1
The Lynx stranded two to start the day before Hendrix scored three in the bottom of the first on three hits, a stolen base and a sac fly. The Lynx finished the inning catching Hendrix stealing. After three scoreless innings where a combined six runners were stranded, Rhodes pulled within one on two doubles, a walk and a sac bunt. Paul Giacomazzi led off the fifth with a double before Will Heurtin walked and Chris Penna recorded a ground-rule double. Heurtin later scored when Peter York grounded out on a sacrifice to the pitcher. Hendrix then stranded two in the bottom of the inning.
With two outs in the sixth, Mitchell O'Berry went to first after being hit by a pitch. He tied the game when Giacomazzi tripled down the right field line. The Warriors threatened in the bottom of the seventh in the seven inning game. Rhodes hit their leadoff batter who got into scoring position on a sac bunt. The Lynx intentionally walked Justin Scott to put runners on first and second with one out. Alex Garrett came in to pitch and the lefty forced a ground ball as the Lynx got out of the jam with a double play to force extra innings.
Rhodes left a runner on in the eighth before committing an error to lead off the bottom of the eighth. With a runner on third and one out, Rhodes intentionally walked the next two Warriors. John Gibbs went to the mound and struck out the next Hendrix batter before Hendrix stranded three on a groundout to first base.
Rhodes capitalized on a Giacomazzi leadoff walk in the ninth before Heurtin made the sacrifice and advanced the senior to second base. Penna was intentionally walked before Wood Kimbrough reached on an error and loaded the bases. York singled in the winning run with a two-RBI hit to right center.
Just as they did in the first inning, Rhodes ended the ninth catching a Warrior trying to steal second.
Giacomazzi finished the game 3-for-4 while Penna tallied two hits. Garrett earned his third win of the season and Gibbs his first save of the season.
Game 2
The Lynx started off game two hot with four runs in the first on their way to a 17-hit game. The Lynx began the game with two singles followed by a Penna triple to go up 2-0. Two more runs crossed after the Warriors committed errors including a passed ball. York added another RBI to his totals on the day when he singled in Giacomazzi in the second. The third and fourth innings were scoreless. In the fifth, Penna tripled once again and crossed Rhodes' sixth of the game on a John McNair single to left center. Hendrix evaded the shutout with two runs in the fifth on three hits including two doubles.
A Hendrix error in the sixth to lead off the inning helped the Lynx plate two more runs to lead 8-2. The Warriors scored once in the bottom of the inning before Dante Messina added yet another Rhodes triple to the box score. Messina scored on a sac fly from Ben Wilson to give Rhodes a 9-3 lead. The Lynx almost ended the game early after scoring four runs on six hits in the eighth (13-3), but a passed ball by Rhodes in the bottom of the eighth helped the Warriors get into scoring position and eventually cross a run.
Kofi Whitehead recorded a pinch hit triple to lead off the ninth. He scored the final run of the game on a strikeout throw down to first base.
Ten Lynx tallied a hit where Penna went 5-for-5 and York added three RBI for the second time in as many games. Rhodes recorded an astounding four triples in the game. Nick Ferazzi picked up the win striking out five in 5.1 innings. He left the game with an 8-3 lead.
Rhodes will travel to Centre College for four big games next weekend. The Lynx are currently third in the conference standings (9-7) as they look to compete against the Colonels who sit fourth with an 8-8 record.
