Moore Walk-Off in 10th Helps Montclair St. Split with Stockton

Montclair, NJ - Junior infielder JASON MOORE belted a three-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the 10th as Montclair State earned a split of it NJAC doubleheader with Stockton University on Saturday at Yogi Berra Stadium.

The Red Hawks (11-4, 3-3 NJAC) lost the first game 7-3, but battled back with two runs in the ninth to tie the second game before Moore's heroics gave MSU a 9-6 victory.

A six-run fourth inning by the Ospreys looked as if it would hold up as Stockton (4-6, 2-4 NJAC) took a 6-4 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning. Reliever Michael Wynne struck out the first hitter, but gave up a single to ANTHONY GUARINO. Wynne fanned the next hitter for the second out, however, JOE NORTON singled to left to keep MSU's hopes alive. Wynne then balked the runners to second and third which proved big as MILES FEASTER bounced a single through the left side scoring Guarino and Norton, tying the game at 6-6.

Feaster stole second to get into scoring position before PETER COSENTINO launched a ball near the warning track in left-center that was hauled in by Nick Trifiletti as the game headed into extra innings.

Red Hawk reliever TYLER HIGGINS tossed a scoreless 10th inning giving Montclair a chance to win the game in its half. ANDREW OLLWERTHER led off with a single and was sacrificed to second. The Ospreys intentionally walked MICHAEL MURPHY putting runners at first and second. Moore stepped to the plate and jumped on the first pitch sending a fly ball down the left field line that stayed fair sending Montclair State home with the 9-6 victory.

Higgins got the victory as he improved to 2-0. Righthanders ALEC BENZINGER and CHRIS LUM combined on five shutout innings in relief to keep the Red Hawks in the game. Wynne (1-1) got the loss.
Moore finished the game 2-for-5 with four RBI while Murphy and Feaster drove in a pair each. Ollwerther was 3-for-5 with Feaster, Cosentino and Guarino each recording two hits.

Trifiletti had three runs batted in for Stockton, a bases-clearing double in the six-run fourth inning.

In the first game, Stockton used another big inning, a five-run fifth that erased a 2-1 deficit. Ryan Swift tied the game with fielder's choice and John Perrino's RBI single put the Ospreys in front. Swift scampered home on a wild pitch for the third run. Luke Fabrizzi and Trifiletti added RBI singles to give Stockton a 6-2 lead.

Montclair State got a run back in the fifth on a Feaster run-scoring single but Stockton answered that in the ninth as Evan Geisler tripled home Perrino.

Righthander Rico Viani (1-0) got the victory as he went the first 7 1/3 innings allowing three runs and seven hits. James Wynne recorded the final five outs for his first save of the season. PATRICK CUCCURULLO (1-1) suffered the loss for MSU.

Moore finished with three hits while Norton and Cosentino (one RBI) had two each.

Montclair State returns to action on Thursday, April 15 with the first game of its home-and-home series against Rutgers-Newark. The Red Hawks take on the Scarlet Raiders at 3:30 pm in Newark.
