WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Marymount University team split an Atlantic East Conference doubleheader against Wesley College afternoon, as the Saints earned a decisive 15-2 victory in the second game. With the win, Marymount's record improved to 10-3 overall and 8-1 in conference play.
Game One
Marymount's bats struggled to find a rhythm in the opening contest on Saturday afternoon. Wesley leaned on Cole Davis on the mound. The Wolverines' starter lasted the full seven innings and held MU's deadly offense to seven hits.
Drew Mead got the start on the mound for the Saints and turned in matched Davis with a complete-game effort. The senior fanned four batters, but Wesley managed to manufacture six runs against MU's defense.
The Wolverines struck first in the opening contest with a trio of runs in the top of the third inning. Wesley used a three-run double to take the lead. The visitors tacked on two more runs in the fifth, and one in the top of the seventh.
MU looked to stage a comeback in the bottom of the seventh. Bill Wojcik jump-started the offense with a single through the left side. Wojcik swiped a bag to move into scoring position before a single from Ryan Maylie put runners on the corners. Casey Baker laced a single into centerfield that plated Wojcik, but the Saints were unable to keep the momentum going as Wesley picked up the win.
Game Two
The Saints bounced back in the second game of the twinbill and earned a decisive 15-2 over Wesley. Justin DiDonato stifled Wesley's offense on the mound with three strikeouts through five innings of work. The Garden City Park, New York, native allowed just one run on three hits to earn his second victory of the season.
Marymount backed DiDonato's effort on the mound with a 16-hit outburst at the dish, the Saints' second-highest output of the season. Jordan Dickson, James DiGiulian, and Wojcik led the charge with three hits apiece. Wojcik added a walk and a game-high five RBI with one home run. Dickson and DiGiulian each registered a pair of doubles to pummel Wesley.
MU's offense started almost immediately, as the Saints plated four runs over the first two innings of the contest. Marymount carried a four-run lead into the fifth inning before it tacked on three during the frame. DiGiulian, Maylie, and Bryce Smith were all responsible for one run apiece to push MU's lead to 9-1.
The Saints offense kept rolling from there and exploded for five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. A passed ball allowed one run to come in before Wojcik caused the remainder of the damage. With the bases loaded, he turned on a pitch and sent a no-doubt grand slam over the left-field wall to make it a 14-1 game. With the contest firmly in hand, the Saints cruised to the win over the final two innings.
Marymount returns to action Friday, April 16, when the Saints host Neumann University at Nationals Youth Academy at 1 p.m.
