NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Picking up the team's second win over a top-ten opponent in the last three games, the Christopher Newport baseball team pitched past No. 7 North Carolina Wesleyan College (23-4) on Wednesday afternoon to capture a 5-1 win. Rookie starter Jay Cassady (1-2) earned the win after combining with three relievers to hold the Battling Bishops to a season-low one run on eight hits while striking out 14.

Cassady tossed five strong innings to pick up his first career win, striking out seven Bishops in the outing. He scattered three hits and allowed just one run before giving way to Danny Checkosky in the sixth. The sophomore cruised through two frames with three strikeouts and just one hit allowed. Freshman Matt Gaither worked around a pair of hits in the eighth to keep N.C. Wesleyan off the board and sophomore Jack Rosenberg emphatically slammed the door in the ninth with three strikeouts.

It was the first time this season the dangerous N.C. Wesleyan lineup has been held to fewer than two runs in a game and only the second time in 25 outings that the Bishops failed to score at least four runs. The USA South foe was averaging over eight runs per game before being stymied by Cassady and Co.

After a solo home run in the fourth for the visitors, the Captains answered immediately with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to tie things up. A three-run fifth would prove to be the difference and the Captains tacked on an insurance run in the eighth.

Daniel Elliott led things off with a single in the bottom of the fourth and moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Brayden Hodges. On a 2-2 count, Alec Reilly stayed hot, driving in the first run of the game. Reilly had four doubles in the last five games with three RBI and kept his hot bat in the lineup with a solid rap into right field.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Captains led off with back-to-back walks from Jonathan Fisher and Eric O'Brien. After a sacrifice fly by Kyle Schofield, Elliott blistered a double into left center to plate another run. Two batters later came Reilly's fifth double of the season, chasing home Elliott for the third run of the inning and a 4-1 lead.

That would put Cassady in position for the win and the Captains bullpen took over from there. Checkosky gave up a lead-off double before retiring six straight with three strikeouts.

The Captains tacked on one more in the bottom of the eighth when Keegan Doyle walked and moved up to second on a balk. An infield single advanced him to third and then O'Brien slammed a single through the left side to plate the game's final run.

CNU outhit the Bishops, 11-8, with four Captains posting multi-hit showings. Fisher, O'Brien, Elliott, and Reilly each went 2-for-4 in the game with Reilly's two RBI leading the squad.

The two teams will face off again on Friday, April 16 in the third matchup between the two teams this season. First pitch at Captains Park is slated for 3:00 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at CNUsports.com.
