WINCHESTER, Va. – After putting up 37 runs in their previous two games, the third-ranked Salisbury University baseball team ran out of gas in its final nonconference game of the season on Monday afternoon, falling to the 15th-ranked Shenandoah Hornets 12-1 for a two-game series split at Bridgeforth Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hornets found their stroke at the plate in the second. Haden Magadan doubled home the first run, then two batters later Matt Moon drew a bases-loaded walk. Frankie Ritter then hit into an RBI fielder's choice and Grant Thompson singled to right, making it a four-run frame and early 4-0 Shenandoah lead.
- Salisbury got its only run in the third as Trent Saunders banged a solo home run to right, his second round-tripper of the season.
- Shenandoah poured it on in the middle three innings, scoring seven of its runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth. The backbreaker came in the sixth inning. With one run home already on a bad pickoff and an error, Woolford came to bat with two on and two out and mashed a three-run homer to right center. Woolford's second blast of the game and the Hornets' fourth gave the home side an 11-1 cushion.
- Woolford punctuated his big day with a sac fly in the eighth, pushing the margin to its 12-1 final tally.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
- Trent Saunders finished 1-for-3 with a solo home run, one of just three hits for the Sea Gulls on the day. Cameron Hyder and Luke Weddell each scratched out a single.
- Jimmy Adkins (3-1) got saddled with the loss for Salisbury, surrendering four runs on five hits in three innings. He hit two batters, walked one and struck out one.
- The loss was the first this season for the Sea Gulls by double-digit runs and marks just the second time the team allowed 10 or more runs in a game.
- Salisbury's one run was its lowest scoring output of the season and just the fourth time the team has failed to eclipse five runs.
SHENANDOAH GAME NOTES
- Keegan Woolford had a monster day at the plate for the Hornets, going 2-for-4 with two home runs and five RBIs.
- Henry Delavergne and Frankie Ritter each homered in the fourth inning two batters apart. Delavergne finished 3-for-3 and scored three times.
- Calvin Pastel (3-1) finished what he started for Shenandoah, tossing a complete-game three-hitter. Pastel walked two and struck out two on 108 pitches.
UP NEXT
- The Sea Gulls will now close the regular season with eight straight Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) games, starting on Friday with a two-game series at St. Mary's (Md.).
- Salisbury beat the Seahawks 18-1 at Sea Gull Baseball Stadium on April 15.
