ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Mike Nickles (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) drove in three runs in the opener as the No. 14 Randolph-Macon baseball team split a doubleheader with Mary Washington on Thursday afternoon.

How It Happened: Game 1

  • The Eagles plated an unearned run in the first and looked to build on their lead in the top of the third. UMW had two in scoring position with one away. The runner on third tagged on a fly ball to right. Freshman Myles Webb (Norfolk, Va./Granby) threw a one-hopper to sophomore catcher Logan Smith (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) to nail the runner and keep it a one-run contest.
  • The Yellow Jackets got their offense going in the bottom of the third. Smith drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second by freshman Grayson Bush (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello). Senior Ryan Duphorn (Erial, N.J./Paul VI) and junior Spencer Pietruszynski (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) drew walks to load the bases. Nickles and junior Will Hass (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) delivered consecutive two-run doubles to give R-MC a 4-1 lead. A base hit by senior Kevin Mooney (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) knocked in Hass as the Yellow Jackets took a 5-1 advantage.
  • UMW added a run in the fourth and loaded the bases in the fifth, unable to cut into the three-run deficit.
  • R-MC would increase its lead in the fifth. Hass had a one-out single and moved to third on a double to left by Mooney. With two away, Webb lined a single up the middle to drive in both runners, giving the home team a 7-2 lead.
  • The Yellow Jackets added an insurance run in the sixth. Duphorn was plunked to start the inning, stole second, moved to third on a single by Pietruszynski and scored on a sacrifice fly by Nickles to make it 8-2.

  • The R-MC senior class earned its 100th career win.
  • Hass went 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBI. He raised his batting average to .548.
  • Webb had two RBI.
  • Senior John Reynolds, Jr. (Bumpass, Va./Louisa) earned the win, going 4.0 innings with four hits, one earned run, no walks and two strikeouts. He raised his record to 3-1.
  • Freshman Wyatt Stanley (Beaverdam, Va./Patrick Henry) tossed two scoreless innings. Freshman Jacob Lawler (Broad Run, Va./Battlefield) worked a scoreless seventh.

How It Happened: Game 2

  • The Eagles tallied seven runs in the top of the first. The Yellow Jackets stranded nine over the first four innings and final broke through in the fifth. Yeargain reached on an error, moved to third on a wild pitch and came home on an infield hit by sophomore Blake Doggett (Richmond, Va./Hanover). With two away, sophomore Brooks Mazey (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) belted his first career home run to make it 7-3.
  • After UMW added three in the top of the sixth, sophomore Ethan Iannuzzi (Chesterfield, Va./Cosby) homered for the third time this season to make the score 10-4. The Eagles scored once in the seventh to make the final 11-4.

By The Numbers

  • Iannuzzi went 2 for 3. He extended his hit streak to 17 games. Iannuzzi has reached base in all 24 games in which he has played.
  • Mazey went 3 for 4 with two RBI.
  • Freshman Andrew Ramos (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) tossed three scoreless innings with one hit, one walk and one strikeout.
  • Junior Jacob Smither (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) made his first appearance of the season and worked a scoreless fifth inning. He gave up a leadoff single but got a fielder's choice and a double play to face just three hitters.
  • Senior Zack Radcliffe (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) pitched the final 1.2 innings with two hits, no walks and two punchouts.
