ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – First year Joey Glampe drove in all five runs for the St. Olaf College baseball team, including a decisive three-run home run in the seventh inning of game one, as the Oles split with Bethel University on Wednesday afternoon at Hargis Park.

Bethel (16-13, 10-9 MIAC) led 2-1 in game one and had St. Olaf (10-3, 3-2 MIAC) down to its final strike before Glampe blasted a three-run shot to left to plate the game-winning runs and back a strong start by classmate Sam Lavin. Glampe also knocked in both runs for the Oles in a 5-2 loss in game two, as St. Olaf was stymied for most of the game by Matthew Bohlke.

Bohlke struck out 18 and limited St. Olaf to two hits in 7.1 innings in game two. The split broke a streak of four-straight sweeps in the series dating back to 2016.

Glampe's five RBI on the day brought his team-leading total to 23 in just 11 games this season.

With St. Olaf trailing 2-1 and down to its final strike, Glampe homered to left field on the 12th pitch of the at bat to lift the Oles to a 4-2 win in the opener. First year Sam Lavin went the distance on the mound, allowing just two runs (one earned) on six hits with one walk and six strikeouts to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Glampe's home run was his team-leading fourth of the year and came with TJ Rogers and Matthew Muller both in scoring position. After the leadoff batter of the inning was retired, Rogers singled to center, moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt, and stole third on a walk to Muller to prompt a Bethel pitching change. Muller proceeded to steal second after a strikeout for the second out and Glampe followed with the decisive home run a pitch after barely getting a piece of a foul ball.

In his first collegiate start, Lavin retired seven of the final batters of the game, including a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh, to close out the complete-game win. The first year needed just 89 pitches and got 10 ground outs in the win.

St. Olaf opened the scoring in the top of the second with an unearned run on a two-out RBI single by first year Brian Nevin. Nevin's single plated senior Eli Tan, who reached on an infield single to start the inning, stole second with two outs, and moved to third on an error that kept the inning alive.

After throwing out a runner at the plate to end the top of the fourth, Bethel tied it up with a run in the home half of the inning and took a 2-1 lead with another in the bottom of the fifth. The Oles threatened to even the game at 2-2 in the top of the sixth with runners on the corners and nobody out, but the Royals escaped with an unconventional double play and a strikeout.

St. Olaf out-hit Bethel by a 10-6 margin in the game, getting two hits apiece from Glampe, Tan, and Nevin. Ty Koehn worked the first five innings for the Royals, allowing an unearned run on six hits with strikeouts but took a no decision after the Oles got to the Bethel bullpen in the seventh.

Bethel 5, St. Olaf 2 | Box Score

Bohlke held St. Olaf scoreless for the first seven innings as Bethel built a 5-0 lead in game two. Glampe had a two-run double in the eighth to get the Oles on the board but it was not enough.

Joey Fredrickson was 3-for-3 with a walk, a home run, two runs, and three RBI to power the Royals' offense, while Koehn also had three hits. Fredrickson started the scoring in the second with a two-run home run, Bethel tacked on two more runs in the fourth to double its lead, and Koehn added a run-scoring triple in the sixth to account for the fifth run.

A pair of singles by Brian Nevin were St. Olaf's only hits until the top of the eighth. In the eighth, Harald Borg and Rogers drew consecutive one-out walks and came around to score on Glampe's two-out, two-run double to the gap in left center.

The Oles generated a threat in the top of the ninth with back-to-back singles by Eli Tan and Andrew Nomoto to start the frame, but Bryce DeLay retired the final three batters to seal the win for the Royals.

St. Olaf travels to St. Peter to take on Gustavus on Saturday, May 1 with first pitch at 1 p.m. The Gusties received votes in this week's D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25 poll.
